GS550 4-1 exhaust or headers

Hi all,
Still relatively new to the forum searching my way through. Contemplating what path my 1977 gs550 is going to venture on.

My stock exhaust is scratched so I was contemplating replacement with a 4-1 or alternate. I was hoping for some good suggestions for 4-1 headers or complete exhausts which would 'reasonably' fit my GS.

For example there is an 2005 GSXF 600 header on ebay for $50 w/ shipping
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/05-Katana-GSXF-600-Exhaust-Headers_W0QQitemZ140319129621QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item20abac0015&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318

How much work would it take to make this fit? Are there any more modern bike suggestions I can watch for?

I am starting to think that the early 550 isn't a widely owned bike around these parts. :o

A lot of people have 550's around here. I cant remember what years as well but if memory serves me well it is pretty balanced from 70's to early 80's. they have the same engine till 82 in 83 its a diff engine. thos headers most likely will NOT fit. plus they look like crap and you would have a lot of work putting a muffler on them. from the picture.

good luck
Jake

Much appreciated response. Any ideas what exhausts would fit?

All of the info regarding exhausts for 550's I have found here seem to involve aftermarket bits made specifically for the gs. You can find a lot of information about making different exhausts fit onto 1000's and 750's but very little on what modern exhausts could be reasonably made to fit onto a 550.

Bottom line is that I have a scratched exhaust which requires replacement. A 4-1 exhaust would be a nice alternative and i was hoping to figure out what my options are.

If you want a 4 into 1, go with a Marshall deeptone exhaust. They make one for your bike. They can be a touch tricky getting them here in the states, but possible. Do a search for them in google.

I was wondering the same thing as you Dreef1999, after looking on ebay and seeing some 4 into 1's (easier to mount wideband o2 sensor) for prices higher then i wanted to pay, i opted to buy a 04 gsxr 750 header for and muf for 49$ and just mod the header to fit my gs550. it should be coming in any day now I will post pics of the fitment on my carb to fuel injection builders log so keep posted

Marshall deeptone ~ $470 looks slick but expensive
MAC ~$320 people seem to say poor things about MAC?

I would love to see how tough it is to get that GSXR 750 to fit the 550.

Regarding exhaust port size judging by exhaust gaskets:
'77 GS550 32mmx42mmx5mm
'04 GSXR750 33.30mmx42mmx5mm

Looks close enough for the port at least.

Does anyone know how to find the port spacing or know of a resource that has them listed?

Edit: Some more exhaust Gaskets that superficially match the gs550. (+port spacing in inches as I find them on the internet, verify and contribute if you can please)

if you are looking to make more power you will get something like this from the forum

"get a bigger bike"

well thats done I guess I need to go to bed finals tomorrow....yeah!!!!

By natural extension. If you want a faster bike

"get a newer bike"

This entire web community is superfluous but in a good way. :) The website is dedicated to the modification and maintenance of obsolete motorcycles.

So got any other ideas on 4-1 exhausts or 4-1 header for a 1977 gs550?

hella good post Dreef1999, i had no idea that the gsxr was that close in size to uor 550's. i was planning on cutting off the tops of the stock 550's and re-welding them to the gsxr header. this might go easier then I first rec-andd:)

edited in a couple spacings as I found them in the wanted section, not verified but worth recording them. If anyone else knows info, port spacing+gasket size I can keep editing and tracking.

Time to bring this thread back and my posting status back from the dead...I have a 1981 GS550T and I think I prefer the 4 into 2 look of the bike a bit more than 4 into 1. My stock exhaust is a bit beat up, so if anyone is getting rid of their 4 into 2 while making the transition, I may be interested!

Don Giablo has a period Bassani 4 into 1 for a GS550 for sale - if you're looking for a nice replacement. Not sure the price, but it was listed in the Parts for Sale section earlier this summer.

I've got the Cycle & Cycle World reviews on the 83 550ES - both mags had very positive reviews of the bike - I'd love to own one!! Sounds like an awesome bike!

If I had an ES version, I'd be all over that Bassani.

Where and how much? I have a Vance and Hines 4 - 1 that I'm losing the battle of a rusty collector...

I have a V&H 4 into 1 on my 1980 GS550E. I like the look of it and the sound is very good. Not too loud with the baffel in. Changing oil is easy have plenty of room to access oil filter .
