A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I recently aquired a 1978 GS550... After alot of effort getting the old girl to run, I notice that after the engine has warmed up at idle and is stopped I can hear an annoying mild knocking sound-it is definitely not tappet noise. Aside from this, the engine seemingly performs very well. The noise goes away at running speeds- using a mechanic's stethescope, it seems loudest at the bottom half of the engine on the throttle side (right) towards the front of the bike.

Anybody else have an engine with a similar sound or know what it is? could this be the early signs of bearing failure?

My engine rattles so much, besides the valvetrain, I dont know whats what:confused:
Part of it I think is the springs on the back of the clutch basket (very common), the rest i dunno.
A knocking rod bearing is very distinctive and I would recognize that right away. Plain main bearing knock is sometimes hard to recognize.
It hits redline and doesnt blow up, so??? I will just run it til I figure out what the rattle is or it blows up:-k

Knock, knock who's there? :)

Now as far as your problem is concerned - does it go "knockity-knockity-plonk" or "knock-knock-plunk" or "knock-bang-grind" or "snap, crackle & pop" ????

Seriously though, you sound like you've got the famed 'GS clutch rattle' to me. Hard to say without actually being there. Find someone local that knows about old bikes if you can. It's a good idea to put your location in your 'profile' because then a local person may be able to help you out.

Good luck.

These are noisy engines due to all the roller type bearings in them.
The first question I would bring up is how well are the carbs set, Balancing the carbs makes a big difference in sound of an engine at low speeds. Also if any of the idle circuits are even partially restricted will cause a roughness inducing noise.
