A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS550 oil/gas leak?

Just picked up a 77 GS550 about a month ago (had been on a 4 year riding hiatus due to kids) and noticed that the left side of the upper engine/plug wires would be coated with a thin layer of oil/gas after every ride. As the engine itself is pretty dirty with numerous burnoff/deposits, hard to tell where the leak is coming from. Anyone know if this motor has a common leak somewhere up front/left side? Left carb/float bowl also leaks a bit too if that has anything to do with it. Bike has just over 10K miles as it did sit for quite some time but runs great when warm...takes forever to warm up though. Great to be back on the saddle again though! Can post pics if later.

It's just going to need 38 years worth of maintenance done to it. Leaks are easy enough to fix, most of them just take an hour or so.

Plug/Wire number one that gets a coat of grease/gas after every ride. Other than that and the float bowl leak, bike rides great.

Could be half moon seals under the 4 chrome cam end covers. Or the 4 outer cylinder head nuts, they have copper washers to seal the main oil feed to cams etc. Have you re-torqued the cyl head ?.

THX!...will check these things this weekend!

Clean it and see what gets dirty again.

Will do...I did try cleaning the corrosion/oil stains with simple green initially but that burnt oil/corrosion wouldn't come off...should I be using something else?

Spray with engine degreaser. Once it's cleaned and dried you can see if the leaks are obvious. If not, then dust the engine with foot or baby powder and the leaks will show up right away.
