    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

gs550 problems help

ok so this isn't the most common thing but here it goes. i have a 1982 gs550 engine in a suzuki 4 wheeler. the quad has been sitting for quite some time years from what i can tell. i took the carbs apart and cleaned them. reinstalled them and the bike will idle but no throttle control at all. the throttle does nothing i see the cv slides moving and the butterflies are free but it has no effect on the engine speed. if i spray carb cleaner in the carbs while it is running it revs up . any help would be appreicated great site thanks

First I want to welcome you to the forum. As for your question, we will most likely need a little more information. What sort of air filtration do you have for carbs--stock airbox with filter, some sort of pods, or none? Likewise are you running a modified exhaust? If you are not running stock components you will most likely need to adjust carb tuning richer in order to compensate. While this is challenging, it is not impossible. Please post some pics, we are kinda voyeurs here for bikes:).
 
it has no air box or filters on it at all, just open carbs. it has a kerker 4 into 1 pipe on it. i will take some pics and post them soon thank you
 
Did you rejet the carbs to compensate for the free flow exhaust and lack of air box. If not, you need to.
 
plus they make air filters for a reason.
unless you've got pantyhose strung across the back of the carbs.... especially on a quad... you're asking for problems.
 
i will be purchasing filters for it as i have to get it to run before i try and ride it. like i said it will idle but the throttle does nothing at all when i try it no effect what so ever..its a new one on me but hey that's life
 
If the butterflys are turning there should be "some" effect when wacking open the throttle. Often times, when the jetting is all jacked up by installing a header and pod filters without rejetting the carbs, opening the throttle throws the engine into a grossly over-lean condition which keeps the engine from reving as you would expect. You might want to reach into the carbs with your finger and make sure the slides lift up; they should lift easily and return down slowly when you let them go. If the butterflys turn, and the slides lift, the problem must be your jetting -assuming the engine is in good shape.
 
Partialy block the air flow to the carb. Length of duck tape? piece of wood?/ THen try & rev it. You are fighting a LOOSING battle trying to get it running without jetting changes

Perhaps you've already seen these, but I like to remind all the new members. In addition to the carb rebuild series, I recommend visiting the garage section via the GSR Hompage and check out the Stator Papers. There's also a lot of great information in the Old Q&A section. I have some documentation on my little BikeCliff website to help get you familiar with routine maintenance tasks (note that it is 850G-specific but many tasks are common to all GS bikes). Other "user contributed" informational sites include those of Mr. bwringer, Mr. tfb and Mr. robertbarr.

Yes, with modified exhaust and intakes you'll be tweaking your carbs to get it running right. At least put some pods on it so that you can adjust the jetting, mixture, balance, etc, and get them dialed in.

What kind of fuel petcock is installed on the tank.should have 2 hoses. if stock 82 ,32mm carbs i believe larger hose beside,on,prime,res goes to a T between #2 & #3. at bowl level. small hose inback of p-cock top #2. by memory. SAN.
 
gentleman thank you for all of your help it has been well appreciated. i have tried all of the above suggestions and it still is doing the same thing. throttle position does nothing at all, so i started over and pulled the plugs and found that the number one plug look good but number 2 thru 4 looked like they were not firing at all just wet and black. i'm leaning towards something in the wiring .it would appear while i'm cranking the motor they all spark just fine but when i let off the start buttom and the bike runs only cylinder number 1 keeps firing the rest go dead. or number one carb is working and the other three aren't which seems odd because they all have fuel in the bowl and the cv slides are jumping up and down. any ideas?? and thanks again for the help
