gs550 to 650 conversion- how are they holding up? tips

I am collecting parts to do a conversion on my gs550 and just wondered how the 550 transmission etc is holding up on other peoples conversions done.

.I want to use the 550 cv carbs and jet to suit (any reccomendations) and if possible a gs550 air box keep things standard looking .

I am after more power throughout rather than all up top of rev range. it will be running a motad 4 into 1 from the 550.

I will take some pics as I start project over the winter.

Run the 650 cams with 550 cam sprockets and search for the cam re-timing specs that rapid ray suggested to someone on here, if you are up for slotting your cam sprockets and learning to degree camshafts.

Should not be a problem reliability wise. The 650 and 550 cranks are nearly identical. You can supposedly run a 77-79 750 clutch basket to run an extra clutch disc to harness that extra power without slippage.

Hi yes measured my cams so my 650s are worn out but 550 cams ive got are like new so i think i will use them.less low down mid range i know but more cc should make up -hopefully!!

I got a set of plus 1mm gs650 pistons new (cruzin image)to fit to a set of 650 barrels but pistons come with no fitting instructions so does .002" sound right for piston to bore clearance or should i go 0015" . I will get cylinders bored to match pistons next.

Those pistons are cast pistons very similar to stock OEM, so reference whatever it says in the factory service manual for piston to wall clearance.

Just found factory spec .035-.045mm had looked at manual on Basscliff site but missed page with the specs on cruzin image also got back to me with the same specs for their pistons thanks for advice.
