    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS550 valve train noise question

So I finally got my '79 550E running today after rebuilding the carbs and adjusting the valves. Its the 1st time I've heard it run on all 4 cylinders since I bought it last month. Its also the 1st time in a LONG time that I actually saw and heard a 550 up close. I was surprised and a little disappointed at how noisy the valve train is. The PO said the chain tensioner had been replaced not too long ago. The bike has 24k miles on it. My question is...as compared to the earlier 2-valve 1100s, is the 500 typically noisier?
I'll be synching the carbs next as I'm certain they're out. FWIW, cylinders 3 &4 are running 40-50 cooler than cyls. 1&2.

How long did you let it run for?
After changing shims etc it can get pretty dry up there, all the cold thick oil drains away.
Normally things quiet down once the oil gets all nice and warm.
If you did a bench sync on the carbs they shouldnt be that far out.
Is the cam timing right?

Noisy valves are happy valves. After you adjusted them, they have more clearance. Should sound like an old sewing machine when running.
 
Problem solved. With the engine stopped, I twisted the tensioner knob backwards and let it go. I started the engine and the noise was considerably less. I shut it off and did the same thing again. It was even quieter when I restarted it. Thought anyone else with this problem would benefit from my results.

Don't stop with turning the knob, rebuild the tensioner. Check basscliff's site and look for bwringers writeup.
