A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS550 with Mikuni Dual Throat Carb, No Info

I put o ring on the crossover fuel tube, the float valve seats and drain plugs.. only ones I didn't appear to be the ones for the choke (enrichener?) plunger..
Got up today to try to get the intake to seal up, but no luck.

The right side carb has a slight bit of gas weeping from the tiny air jets that face the air filter. Gotta find a spec for float height or check the needle valve is working, they are the metal type.

I tried to leverage the carbs fully into the intake boots with no luck. Even got them really warm with my hair dryer but they just dont want to seat.

This chopper has been a real pain to work on. I just drained the tank again and I am removing the carbs (again).. Might have to remove the intake boots to see WTF is up with the fit.
Trying not to despair at the constant set backs. I hope I can look back on this some day soon and laugh (or puke). Ha.

They are hard to get on.
my method required both hands and a length of 2x4

Yes indeed, I did that a lot back in the day with my SOHC Honda 750's

I went to the owners parts engine and retrieved a decent right side intake boot.
Online searching I put in an order for
Intake boot o-rings 4
bowl drain seals 2
new float valve seats and needles w/ o-rings 2
exhaust seals 4
new spark plugs 4

My second go round I will be using an auxiliary fuel tank for easier testing, The bike ran and even idled poorly with the intake leaking so I think we are getting close to a working chopper again.

I drilled out the plugs covering the air screws on the replacement carb, and since there is no air box (just stock boots with air filter foam tightly taped in) (I know proper tuning is unlikely)
I set all 4 air screws at 2.5 turns from seated.

The choke plungers seem to seal well with their o-rings

After all this effort I hope to have a functional chopper next week

Now about that rear brake return spring....... ha

UPDATE:

Carbs are sealed up, intake sealed and tight and a nice bath and blow dry heat (and a touch of lithium grease) the carbs seated really well.
Bike fires up just like a jap bike should, even with non-compliant exhaust and intake.. It is running like it used to again.
Gonna leave it to the owner to decide about increasing jetting and new tires, chain, etc...
What a struggle but Im calling that a win.
Thanks to all the forum members that offered advice.

Now for that Shovelhead crank seal leak..
