Hi All,

I tried searching the forums for my answer but wasn't able to find the specific info I'm looking for. (so if this has been covered before, please post a link, and I'll gladly read the thread!)

1979 GS550L, in the process of restoration, discovered that the rear caliper is atrocious. I'm looking to buy a used one on ebay, and rebuild it. I cross referenced part numbers on bikebandit, and I'm aware that i can use the caliper from the other larger bikes, and from years 78 - 80. According to bikebandit, the part number changed in 1981...will it still fit my model? Will the rear calipers from any other years fit my 79 550L? :-k

Any help is much appreciated!

You did good to check the part numbers. I'd focus on finding a caliper within the year range you need or just rebuild the one you have. What's wrong with it? Piston kits with new seals should fix it up unless the casting is damaged.

More kudos on doing a search and cross-reference, but might I suggest a better source? :-k

Bike Bandit is a decent enough place with tolerable prices, but they are the only one of our major suppliers that does NOT use Suzuki part numbers.
I would suggest that you use any of the other suppliers to find the actual part number for the part you want, then plug that number into the reverse search option for Babbitt's or Motogrid. They will tell you ALL the other models that use that part number.

These are the models that use that same rear caliper. It includes GS models from '79 to '83, but maybe not all models.

thanks a TON, all of you.

I hadn't realized bikebandit's part #'s were different than Suzuki #'s.
(i figured I'd be more likely to get responses if I showed a little initiative, rather than rely on forum members to do ALL my research ;) )

as for the condition of the current caliper, the casting is fine, but the pistons are dinged and bent up and the inside piston won't move at all. there are no rubber seals or boots, and plenty of corrosion. springs are broken, shims are missing....you get the idea!

Rather than work my a$$ off getting those pistons out, and pick up the other little parts I'm missing, I'd rather just spend the 25 bones or so to get one in better condition.

interestingly enough I took the front caliper off fully expecting to see a similar situation, and behold, pads and caliper were in pristine condition. Selective upkeep! Thanks P.O.!

Where do you get that info like that Don?

Where do you get that info like that Don?

Hi Bill,

It's from a Suzuki Cross Reference Programme I purchased a couple of years ago. It does all the cross referencing between models and parts. It's amazing how many GT parts are the same as those on our GS bikes. I'll look up the programme when I get home from work and email you.

suzuki don.....do you need any new best friends? :D j/k

guess I can let my p.o. slide a little about neglecting the rear caliper. I was getting set to check on the points and maybe tackle the timing, pulled off the timing cover, lo and behold....one of the p.o.'s has already upgraded me to the dyna electronic ignition!

I can always do with a new friend. My email address is on my profile anytime you want any assistance.

Hi Don,
Besides all the other help you have given me, feel free to email me any info on this software.
Offtopic: I just got my first calliper.

Zedder has become very useful for ordering parts for the restoration of my GS550ET

The actual database is an Access file, but the front end (zedder program) makes it so easy to search and cross reference.. well worth getting if you are restoring, or in need of replacing parts..

There are plenty NOS items on ebay, that give the part number.. just put in the number, and hey presto! all the bikes that it fits.
