A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

gs650gl beginner trouble

Thanks for the recommendation, Rich.

I have thought about charging an arm and a leg, but that would make it REAL hard to ride, so I only charge a few digits. :encouragement:

.

I can attest to pricing! I sent mine to Steve and paid an affordable price (for me). I bought the o-rings from Cycle-Orings and sent it all to the Steve. Good decision for me.

im not sure i can check what are you referencing to, i dont know if mine is a model x or z any ways i can tell?
If you have an '81 bike, it should be an X. If you have an '82 bike, it should be a Z.

Go back to my post #12, note the reference in item #5 to verify your serial number. Suzuki changed the head and valve cover some time during the '82 model year, so it's not good enough to say that you need the newer gasket if you have an '82, because some of the early '82s in the production run still had the old parts. If you can't read your ENGINE serial number, at least look at the picture carefully. Note the area of the valve cover that projects forward. Looking at the gasket, it appears to have a bolt hole on the left side of the projection. That is for the newer engines. The older engines had 16 bolts that held the cover to the head, the newer ones had 17, with the extra one being the one shown in the picture.

yeah its a newer one i have 17 bolts and the 17th bolt is to the right of the tachometer cable input on the engine if ur looking at the bike from the front if im correct, and the plate for the breather has 4 bolts, both of the gaskets are squeezing out from where they're placed. so i should order a gasket for the breather section too right

also id like to ad my bike did smoke a bit so would that mean my valve seals are probably done for, when it heated up the smoke was basically gone but smoke isnt good either way for these is it.

Breathe REAL DEEP before deciding to change the valve seals. :-k

That involves taking the engine apart until it looks like this:

OK, not quite that far. You don't need to remove the stator or the starter.:-k

yeah i spoke to steve about it and ill be sending them to him, feels good knowing its somebody alot of people on here can trust and hes been helping me with other issues over the days, honestly before this forum i was on oldschool suzuki and basically all that got done is people told me to clean the carbs, which they are right but its alot better being here on a model specific forum ive got to know plenty of things about my bike as soon as i joined.

thanks for the help guys and thanks for the recommendation rich lol

Super Steve will get you all dialed in. He is known as the GS whisperer for good reason. You have most definitely landed in the right place this time. You will find no better forum on the interwebs. We were all neebs an one point. Some start off with mechanical ability, and some don't. Eventually, you will know your bike inside and out, and she will treat you right. Good luck, and welcome to the forum.
