A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS650GL - Getting carbs back to baseline from mismatched jets

vonmule

Forum Newbie
I've got a new-to-me '81 GS650GL. Runs...sorta. Hard to start, high idle, bogs down, but it also didn't have an air filter installed. I've got an Uni air filter now and it's got the original airbox and pipes, so I've got the luxury of returning to stock carb specs. Looks like the previous owner used an Amazon rebuild kit for some of the parts and the original Mikuni jets aren't quite right either. At this point I've completely disassembled the carbs and cleaned them.

My questions: Should I put it all back together and see if I can get it running? Is it a waste of time, given that the amazon needle jet has half as many bleed holes as its supposed to and the genuine Mikuni jets are odd? Is it even capable of running well, or should I open my wallet and start buying Mikuni jets per the stock spec? I'm leaning toward getting the correct needle jets ($75 for 4 from the netherlands) and pilot jets. Thoughts?

Stock
Main: 110
Pilot: 42.5
Pilot Air: 160
Needle Jet: Y-7
Jet Needle: 5C45

Current
Main: 112.5 (Mikuni)
Pilot: Unknown (Amazon)
Pilot Air: 155 (Mikuni)
Needle Jet: Unknown (Amazon)
Jet Needle: 5C45 (Mikuni)

Thanks

I would return to stock and use genuine Mikuni parts and if forced to use aftermarket then Keyster if they cover your model.
All other Ebay and Amazon "kits" should be avoided like the covid..
Money spent on the correct parts now is going to save you a bunch further down the line.
