A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

I'm starting to resurrect a 1982 GS650L. I get power to the lights but there is no cranking. The ignition fuse connection is broken in the fuse box and this part is not available. Can it be fixed, is there a replacement? Any help would be appreciated. Bobbyn

I believe they are glass fuses, but can't say for sure, as my son's fusebox was in very sad shape when we got the bike. Can't swear it was an original piece.

There are a few options available:
1: Source a direct replacement from a member here or from eBay
2: Replace it with something a bit better, like one from Eastern Beaver.
3: Replace it with something even better, albeit a bit pricier, too, like the solid-state one from member Poslayr.

I have installed the Eastern Beaver fuse box on all four of the GSes in my stable. I get just the box, not the wiring kit that he also offers, as I can't guarantee that all the wire lengths and relay locations that he offers will work with the intall that I have in mind. I feel capable of doing my own wiring, so will save the $20 or so that the wiring kit costs. It's great quality work, I just choose to do it myself.

82's had glass fuses.Do you still have fuse box cover? I know that I have a decent fuse box but its cover appears MIA.
how much resurrection does this critter need?

Its glass fuses. The middle fuse is the ignition and thats broken. IMAG2202.jpg

If you feel like you're up to it, I'd recommend replacing the entire fuse block with a newer style that uses spade type fuses. The old glass fuses are not the best in a high vibration environment.

The fuse box is not too bad shape (see pic). At this point I'm not too sure about the bike since I can't get it to crank. The bike seems to be 90% there, plus I have a clean title. I'm thinking straight handlebars with a solo seat.

I think its going to come out great. Bobbyn

What have you done to try to get the bike to crank?

If this is your first GS, are you aware that you have to pull the clutch lever to use the electric starter? :-k

I was not aware. The fuse box is still broken but I jury rigged it and, after pulling the clutch, got it cranking. That started the process of lubing all the cables, and finding the choke cable needs replacing.

On to the carbs!

Thanks for the tips. More questions to follow.
