    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS750EC Dyna S ignition timing

I am trying to statically time my 78 GS750EC with a Dyna S ignition, Dyna coils and Dyna spark plug wires. The instructions say to use a motorcycle timing light which I do not have. I do have a digital multimeter.

I thought that, by setting the DMM to VDC and connecting the probes where instructed, I could see where the voltage would read 12v or so which would be same as turning on the lamp.

When I turn on the ignition key, the DMM reads around 10v and only marginally changes as I rotate the engine clockwise.

Is there a correct way to do this or should I just go out and purchase a motorcycle timing light. I have an inductive timing light for automotive timing but I thought that I would start with static and then do the inductive as a fine tune.

Hi Cas, When I installed mine, I set the plate to the middle of the adjustment range then fired it up with the inductive timing light installed. A small move put it right on the money.

Ok, I'll try that but I am a little confused. I usually put the inductive light on plug wire on my car. The GS has two coils and timing marks, 1-4/2-3.

If I put the clamp on plug wire 1 and adjust 1-4 accordingly will that also take care of 2-3 or do I move the inductive clamp to plug wire two to check that?

Use the inductive timing light to first adjust your 1-4. It's easy because all you do is clamp the inductor onto the number 4 plug wire. Once that's set, move the clamp to the number 3 plug wire. If needed, the 2-3 adjustment is not made by rotating the whole plate but by loosening the two screws on the 2-3 pickup (the right hand one). I put a Dyna S on my GS550 6 years ago. I've checked timing twice since then and it's always been right on, never needed adjustment again. It's a very fine ignition upgrade.

Onchiman, thanks for the information. I used the inductive light as you suggested and timed the Dyna S. There are three marks on each set 1/4, 2/3 labled T, F and "/" (which is about .5 inch past the F), I used the "/" mark to time.

I set the idle at 2,500 RPM while I timed it. Had to adjust the 2/3 pick up a little but everything seems to be fine.

Please let me know if I used the wrong mark.
