    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GS750L - Putting a fuel guage back on

Ive just bought a 1980 GS750L and she has had alot of the electrical bits removed. No electric starter, indicators etc but the main thing I really would like to put back on her is the centre console with the fuel guage. If I get the console and the wiring loom is it just a case of plugging it back into were ever the connector is for the fuel sensor/fuel float. If so were is it and what does it look like. Never had a GS before so it all new and exciting *Big grin*

...and I may even put some piccys up when I get her to how I want her :)
 
The gauges should just plug in. Look under the tank for the square plug with nothing attached.
As for the fuel gauge, look for two female connectors near the battery box.
And please post pictures of the "as is" condition that you found her in also.

?450 I bought her for... she is going to become a nice satin black with barb wire motif. Not a rat bike but not a chromey bike, somwhere in between :)
 
OK so i bought a fuel guage for a GS750. It has wiring with it that will plug into the female connectors near battery box and a square plug that will plug in to 'read' where the float is in the tank. Only problem is were is this to be connected. Took the tank off and the only thing under (attached to the tank) is the fuel tap. Is the 'float reader' connection actually on the bike or the tank? Below is a standard GS750 tank off EBay and this too hasd no plug on the actual tank. Im confussled and need to lie down :)

Anyone? Anyone? :D

It seems to be heavily modded. New speedo, revometer and bars amongsth other bits. So if it is earlier than 80 did they not have fuel gauges on them? If I get a later tank and put that on will this help me get a fuel guage back on the bike? Im confused your gonna have to spell it out for me I'm afraid ha ha :lol:
 
The engine, carbs, kickstart all are from an earlier model than '80.

The 750 changed completely in '80 to a 16 valve, non-kickstart engine with different carbs. :)

If your bike was an '80 the engine would look like my '81 750.

Ahhhhh I seeeeeee..... still wondering if the earlier models were fuel gauge-less though. Just bought a fual cluster and no were to plug the friggin thing into now lol
 
Just done a registration check and its come back as manufactured in 1980 and first registered in April 1980 so I am proper puzzled now. Im in the UK so maybe thats made a difference? So confused now lol
 
Your bike may have been left over from the previous year and registered incorrectly.

Yes, the 1st generation 750's had fuel gauges. This is what the fuel unit looks like, it is inside the tank and sends a signal to the gauge to indicate fuel level. This is of course from an '81 750, but, yours should be similiar. :)

EDIT::: I may be wrong about the fuel gauge.....sorry, I'm not that familiar with them.....I was looking at this "for sale" thread and there is a great picture of the gauge cluster. I can't see where there is a fuel gauge. Perhaps someone else will chime in to clear this up.

Im gonna buy a GS750 tank from the 80s with fuel sensor (and float inside) and just plug the fuel gauge into the sensor, wire it up to, maybe the headlight and see what happens. Cheers for the help... much appreciated
 
my 79 has a fuel gauge and the tank on your bike is longer by around 2" compared to my stock bike.Front calipers probably slightly more handy than a fuel gauge though.Finally just fixed my fuel gauge wiring and now it works.Doesnt seem to make the bike go any better

The front brake is with the bike, just not attached yet as uprated drilled disc has been added to the bike. :)

How does your fuel tank know when its low then as early tanks Ive looked at don't have a fuel sensor under the tank... unless its somehow connected to the fuel tap. :-s
 
There are two wires coming out from the tunnel at the rear of the tank that connect to the loom just in front of the battery.I have had the tank off but have not looked at the sensor but hopefully doing my steering head bearings today possibly and will get a photo then.

I have an '80 "L" model. I am afraid to chime in as I feel your bike is not an '80. If you look at the exploded diagram (microfische) already posted you can see how the sender "should" be inside the tank. Not all motorcycles have a gauge, some you actually take off the cap and LOOK inside to see the fuel level. But a key link in that type of system is a petcock that has a Reserve setting. There is a second pick-up tube to reach deeper into the tank and if you run out of fuel with the petcock in "run" or "on" you simpley switch it to "reserve" and hit the next petrol station...
Our '80 "L" doesn't have that style of a petcock, when you run out you are done, time to push. I think that was the influence of adding a gauge.

If you go to basscliffs site the is a few pictures of the sender mounted in tank under "fuel sender overhaul".It looks like early gs750's had no fuel or gear position indicators, but i may be wrong,and that is what model your tank was off.Just got my camera back and the batteries are charging if you still need an image of tank let me know
 
Well if anyone sees a GS tank with the fuel gauge sender attached try and get in touch with me as Im desperate to get this sorted. My 'Baby Bike' Honda Shadow died yesterday so Im bikeless at the moment :(
