My son picked up an 850 cheap that was sitting for about 8 years. We have worked with it some and got it running, but it still appears to have carb issues. It will start and run okay at low rmps, but as soon as it hits around 3500 the engine starts missing. If you continue to apply the gas, it dies, but will then restarts fairly easily. If you back off the gas as soon as the missing starts, it will continue to run at low rpms.

I am very familiar with the older 2-stroke GTseries bikes, but this is my first real venture into 4-strokes.

Thanks for any help

Kevin

Hey Kevin, welcome to the forum.
If you havnt already I'd suggest ya go through the carb rebuild section and get those things cleaned really good. Thos CV's are fun and easy to work on.
I like to do em one at a time(doing a set now) so I can use one for reference.
You'll be AMAZED at the difference if they're done correctly.
Also the orings under the intake boot orings need to be replaced but be forwarned, those screws are very easy to strip the heads or bust off.
Do some reserch, use the search option and you'll get it all figured out.
Clean clean clean, is the key!

We need some details on the bike....year, model any modifications such as exhausts, pods and of course pictures. Welcome to the group, lots of good info and help abound in the site.

AZR,
1983GL-stock

OCTAIN,
Excellent info. Looks like as long as the diaphrams are not damaged, should be a realitively cheap cleaning/rebuild, as long as you don't count labor. :^)

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin, dont forget the orings from http://cycleorings.com/

Provided your boots dont need replaced it shouldnt cost more than about 50 bux to clean em. That includes the Berrymans carb dip, bowl gaskets(10 bux from ebay sellers), orings and boot allen fasteners.

Keep the board posted. Lots of knowledge around here.

If you're trying to run it without the airbox in place and properly sealed, that's the results you will get

But, the carbs probably need a complete cleaning anyway

The CV carbs need intake restriction to run properly

Thanks for the info everybody. Will let you know how it works out. But it may be a bit since he has college finals coming up, and I am not close to where the bike is to work with it myself at the moment. Figured it would be a good winter project to get started on though, since there are currently 4 inches of snow on the ground here, and more coming down. :^)

To early to tell. If during dis assembly if the mixture screws need replacement
Yes I would buy the kits. Other wise they are not needed

One more question for the moment anyway.

What are the opinions on this deal.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/4-SU...5077432QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
One of the best prices around on those type of kits, but PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY.

You don't need kits like that. Too often, the brass pieces are of sub-standard quality, there are parts in there that you don't need, and it's missing a LOT of parts that you do need. About the only useable parts might be the float valve and the bowl gasket. There aren't nearly enough o-rings do to the carb, and you don't get any of the o-rings that you need for the transfer tubes that go from one carb to another.

You will be far better off getting your can of Berryman's Carb Cleaner Dip from Auto Zone for about $20, get an o-ring kit from Robert Barr at cycleorings.com for less than $15.

Take your time, strip each carb down to the bare body, dip the bare body and all the brass jets (no plastic or rubber pieces) for 24 hours. Remove those parts from the dip, rinse them in hot water, dip the parts for the next carb. Continue until they are all done. Yeah, it takes several days, but you will only have to do it ONE TIME. :D

While you are ordering the o-rings, be sure to also get the o-rings for the intake tubes, along with the stainless bolts. Overall, you will end up spending about the same as for those kits, but you will have to shell out even more to get the o-rings if you get the kits, and you will still have to get "the dip".

Somehow this does not surprise me:rolleyes:. The Keyster carb kits are the same way for the GT 550 series bikes. They do not even have the right size jets in them.

Which is why I asked.. ;)

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. jkevinlilly,

Unless you need to replace any "hard" parts in the carbs, all you have to do is disassemble, dip, then reassemble with a set of O-rings from http://cycleorings.com and new float bowl gaskets. If any metal parts need replacement, then get OEM parts (jets and needles, etc). You'll find lots of GS850G lovin' on my little website. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Thanks for the warm welcome BASSCLIFF, and the rest of you folks too. I will also pass this on to my son since it is his bike we are currently trying get sorted out. My GS750 project is for a future date.

And just so everybody here knows, this site has a great reputation from the forums that deal with the 2-stroke side of old Suzuki's.:clap::clap:
Which is why I can here for advice.

I prefer to ask questions and learn through the mistakes of others over not asking and then just making them myself. :)

Well, at least the jets have the right numbers on them. The question is whether the jets are accurately sized. :o

Anybody know off the top of their heads which intake o-rings fit this bike? 32, 38 or 40mm. Told you the one question I has earlier was just for the moment. ;)
