A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi All!
It?s been some time since i posted regarding the on going project of repairs to my 79 GS850. I have been reading lots of past posts on all things related to her repairs. Now i need some help!

The current symptom:
On cold start fires up on choke first time warms up at 3500rpm, good so far. On pulling out in first gear it bogs way down to almost dying. If i pull in clutch & rev her up to 3k and slip the clutch she will move out ok. Once up to speed in either 2-3rd gear there?s some poping & snorting mostly from the left exhaust. Get up to 4000+rpm and smooths out. After 2 miles or so the need to slip into first gear is not needed?

What has been done so far:

  • Carbs, dismantled & dipped as you always recommend. all new Orings, gaskets. Carbs were synced after installed.
  • Air box is nice & tight with a K&N filter. (was jetted with the K&N)
  • All electrics test fine.
  • DynaS igniter installed by PO
  • Dyna coils recently installed to match the igniter.
  • Compression check was good.

Any/all help needed as i really would like to get out and ride. The weather in Key West is starting to cool. Now is the time!!

New intake boots?
Intake boot O rings?
Valves adjusted?

Yes on O rings, old boots were still in good shape.
Valves to be checked is next. Can valves out of adjustment be the cause of some of the issues?
Many Thanks!

Valves always tighten up with time/miles. Tight valves make it harder to start, especially when cold. If your bike is starting easily, the valves are likely not <too> tight, but that does not mean you don't need to check them. When you do check them, make sure the cam lobes are positioned properly. HINT: "properly" is NOT with the lobe pointing directly away from the valve.

What are your air screw and fuel screw settings on the carbs?

"Warming up" at 3500 RPM makes me cringe. 2000 is perfectly adequate.

.

Steve,
I did not do the carb's myself & will check with the mechanic & let you know. We will be doing valves soon. Bike once its warmed up is doing well but can't really get out for a ride due to this pesky tropical storm that will be around for a few days! The 3500 on warm up is my fault got a little carried away.

Thanks

A VM bike, in your temperatures, should start instantly without choke and warm up in the time it takes to put on your gloves

If it doesn't, you need a new mechanic
