    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

gs850 starter selanoid

is my starter selanoid knackered
i have a full charge in my batterry ,when i go to start the engine the selanoid just clicks and then starts to make a whirling sort of noise
is the problem with the selanoid or has it something to do with the starter motor? cheers shep
 
Is it the solenoid that make the whirring noise or the starter motor itself. If it's the starter motor, you have a problem either with the drive gear on the end of the starter motor or the starter clutch that is located behind the stator rotor under the LH engine cover.
 
If the "whirring" noise is coming from the solenois, which I find unusual, then replace it.

have changed the selanoid,when trying to start the engine the selanoid still clicks and the starter motor makes the whirring noise but does not turn is this pointing to the answer in a previous reply to this problem?

now this is odd,battery charger says the battery is full,but can't start the engine ,but i can jump start it of a car battery without the cars engine running,any ideas ?

Noise

Clicking noise from a perfectly good solenoid is very common on cars, bikes, lawnmowers, etc. I think that's one of the most common parts that are needlessly replaced. If it's bad, it's a 10 minute fix but I would guess the problem is with the starter drive.:? At least you're getting "juice" down to the starter, so you're well on your way towards figuring it out.
 
Recently had an earth problem, do you think this could have affected the battery, so the selenoid cannot pull enough current off to turn the starter motor?

I wouldn't think so but you can check your voltage with a multimeter at the solenloid by switching on the ignition and having someone push your starter button. I bet you'll find that you're getting good voltage to it. If so, you'll pretty much have to suspect the starter. Good luck and let us know. I've recently had horrid problems, myself.

i can start the engine with a jump start,but not direct from its own battery,this is what is now confusing me

Well, that says a bunch!! Check your battery to see what it's up to....maybe you've got a dead cell, no agua or some other problem. Batteries are so unpredictable!8-[

Or... if you've ever charged it at higher than a 5 amp rate, the lead plates within the cells may have warped and shorted out. If it starts off of an auto battery but not off of the motorcycle battery, you've just eliminated all other problems. If the fluid levels in your cells are not the problem, you may have to replace the battery. At the very least, you should probably put it on a trickle charge for a few hours to make sure it really is charged to capacity before you go any further.
