    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

GSX1100E sprocket seal

Hello Guys, I'm new here but have been lurking for some time.

I have a 1980 GS/GSX1100E which I purchased in large pieces, which should have been a fairly straight forward re-assembly but.......I have now discovered is leaking badly from the oil seal behind the front sprocket.

Is this seal replaceable without splitting the cases?

With that clip in there I don't see how but if I recall Rapidray had a way to do it without splitting the cases.

I think with that retaining ring the cases have to be split. (I asked Ray also)
 
It looks to me like it could just be missing the oring that goes behind the sprocket spacer from where the oil is. Ray.

I agree with Ray, the seal itself does not seem to be leaking. The oil is dripping off the output shaft so it is likely to be the "O" ring.

Just another comment though and that is that if the collar/spacer that the inner seal lip runs on is removed on these motors then that would give a lot of extra clearance for the new seal to be dropped down and inserted/wiggled under the upper crankcase lip and put in place and then insert the metal collar that was previously removed. Never worked on one of these transmissions, just an observation.

Not enough room to get the seal in without bending it, which would make the seal junk. If the large flat c clip is there you HAVE to split the case. In this case I still don't think the leak is from the seal. It COULD be but I would change, or install, the oring first. Ray.
 
Thanks for the response Ray, like I said I have never worked on one of these motors. My engine has two seals on the transmission output shaft and no "O" ring, so I am only familiar with that arrangement.
 
Thanks for the responses guys. I have also asked around locally with some knowledgeable GS/GSX persons and the consenus is that it is the O ring leaking. I'm hoping they are right.

I have ordered two of the little suckers and will give that a go first.

If that doesn't do the trick, I'll pull the motor out and split the cases.:mad:

Just bumping this to let you all know that it was indeed the O ring, not the seal. I changed it over and now no oil leak.:D
