A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Harley mufflers for the GS850

I'm sorry, I didn't intend to imply that. My point is more that needing a replacement muffler is a common problem, and documented fix should be stored in a place where everyone can easily find it. We've had other threads about using HD mufflers to replace GS mufflers, but this is the easiest to understand one that I recall.

I agree 100%
Perhaps he can do a write-up with pictures/video and place them in the Tips and Tricks Section?

I agree that it would be mighty helpful to have a detailed write-up on this with pictures.

I'm waiting on doing this with two EMGO shorty mufflers but I get a little hesitant about doing irreversible mods like cutting exhaust pipes up.

Did you use a hacksaw to cut the pipes? sawzall? were the pipes on, or off the bike? were the pipes double-walled where you cut them?
I just busted out the trusty sawzall. I put a straight cut on the pipes, then cut the 2" extension piece at a slight angle so I could rotate it to a point where the mufflers angled out enough and were still upswept. Pipes were on the bike. It was not double wall where I cut it. I was going to try to slip the harley pipe over mine by grinding down the pinch weld, but it quickly led to a big hole so I stopped with that plan.

In my case the stock mufflers were beyond repair, so they wasn't much of a risk.

I'd be happy to do that! We're leaving tomorrow on a camping trip for the weekend but next week I can work on something.

I'm actually doing the same thing to my bike, same mufflers as well I believe. Do you have any interference with the kickstands up? Mine is just mocked up right now and it looks like I'm not going to be able to put the kickstands up all the way. I made similar brackets, but I bolted them from the back side on the frame mount to get the mufflers a little closer to the bike so they don't " flare " away from either side of the bike as you look at it from the back. I will try and post some pics when I get home. I have never posted a pic before so be patient.

Can you see this? My first pic.

Just got home from our camping trip and when I saw this post I immediately went out and checked for stand clearance. The side stand touches the muffler, but that's how the originals are too so I expected that. The rubber bumper lands right on the clamp. However, the center stand is going to need some help. It's hitting in a way that keeps it about two inches away from it's bump stops. I think just about an inch or so of tubing added to the step will take care of it.

I'm glad it was brought up, because I honestly didn't notice it.

Center stand mods will be required it seems. Great idea on the brackets! Mine don't flare out much but bringing it in even a quarter of an inch would benefit the stand problem. I may have to build some new brackets that fit the back like yours. I don't think our mufflers are the same, though. Mine don't have the sliding mount; I've just got two threaded holes on them.
