Has this crankshaft passed the point of no return?

Hi!

I have recently purchased a 1983 GS1100E crankshaft with aftermarket welds because I "thought" that it was a "good deal".

After receiving it, I have pulled the rotor and was shocked to see the condition of the taper on the crankshaft.

Note: The center of the rotor is in a similar condition.

I think that this is way beyond being repairable and I need to contact the seller to see if he's willing to make this right.

What do you think (other than laughing at such a dumb move on my part)?

Yep, for road use that's an end waiting to fall off.

The only potential purchaser is a racer who wants to cut the end off anyway.

it would hold a starter nut for racing only but will never hold a rotor again.
this is what i hate about the 80-82 cranks.

thats not an 83 crank unless its from a katana which used the small left side like the 80-82 E cranks.

The number stamped on the rotor is 037000-1683.

Google search displays Ebay sales in Germany for:
GSX 750 GSX 1100 Katana alternator rotor 037000-1683

This is getting deeper each time I look at it.

Thanks!

You could always have Gardner or Pearson change the left end on the crank & then it is still a good crank if all the bearings & rods check out. If the rods have the # 492 on them, it is just a regular 1100 crank. If they have 493 on them, it is a KATANA crank & worth saving. Ray.

so it is a small left side crank.
check the rod numbers as ray said.
in the end...without having x-ray vision all the rods could be stepped and all you have is a parts crank.
crank work isn't cheap no matter who you use.
what did you pay for this including shipping?
you may be beyond the point of no return already.

They have 493 stamped on them. What are these rods worth (if good)?
Thanks!

It's very possible. I'm holding off for a day or two before calling the seller ...

I'm aware of that. On the other hand, after speaking with John Pearson on the phone this spring, I intended on sending him my OEM 83GS1100E crankshaft in the fall. Looks like I might be sending him a few crankshafts ...

$220.00

Thanks!

john's the man!
493 rods are just a little thicker in the beam and i believe they cost the same as 492's.
i would try to make the seller eat it....just my opinion.
would it be out of line to ask for the ebayers ID but only if he tries to shaft you.

He was very easy to talk to ... and sounded very honest. :)

He's not an Ebayer ... but from Psychobike. I'll update the results after contacting him this week.
Thanks!

Which seller on Psychobike? I do a fair amount of buying & selling there. Where is he located if you don't want to give his name? Thanks, Ray.

Bully!! if a rotor was on it when it arrived another will fit FINE. it's not like a taper friction fit has to be mirror smooth and have 0.000" run out.

worried? I'll trade you straight across for a stock low mileage 1150 crank I have

The seller did good.
After conversing on the phone, and looking at the original costs of shipping the crank + Paypal fees, we decided that I would keep the crank and we would split the difference. Otherwise shipping it back would have eaten up the rest of the $$$.
He refunded me $74.50.
Thanks for your insight! :)

Thanks for the offer but I will set the crank aside for a while and decide later what I want to do with it.
Note: One way or another, I do not have a GS1150 motor in which to install you crank.

the taper can be fixed easily

the taper can be fixed easily

just thought I'd offer.

The rods are the special parts I was interested in -suz#12161-49302

only 74.50 bucks back?? and I offered you a $400 unit?

I dodged a bullet on that one, thanks for passing
