A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi All.

Can I swap out the Standard Head Light Bulb with an LED Bulb or do I need to do any modifications.

Regards

Chris

Year. Make. Model of bike?
The site's search function is your best bet.
I don't recall reading of anyone having any luck with a bulb replacement.

For replacing a whole sealed unit, Truck-Lite is the popular whole-unit plug-n-play replacement that fits models with a 7" bucket.
Here's one such thread about that:

One thing you need to make sure of before going to LED, is that your charging system can handle it (the lower draw). Many of us have gone to using a series type R/R-SH775, and eliminating the stator headlamp loop, which handles it. Don't ask me how. That's above my pay grade.

I've succesfully fitted H4 LEDs to all my bikes, but the crucial thing to look for is the LED cobs must be nearly in the same position as the original filaments.
Many of the cheap LEDs have cobs that are far too big and the result is a wild scattering of light.

This pic shows the Philips Ultinon, for reference.

Brilliant, thanks Dave.

No problem.
There is something else...
Some of the original parabolic bowls and lenses don't work well with some (even good) LEDs - however, some LEDs have an adjustable / rotatable base by which you can alter the beam pattern and lock it in via small screw on the base of the bulb. Not entirely sure how common this is, as some of mine have it and some don't.
By experimentation I was able to mix and match to get good outcomes, but just lobbing in an LED is no guarantee of success on its own.
My next purchase will be a set of the Philips Ultinon, as I assume (rightly or wrongly), they've paid a bit of attention to proper fit and location, and they have a couple of EU approval docs, which most of the others don't have.
