A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Headlight help

Hello folks.

I have a 1981 GS 550 that I purchased for my first bike about 3 weeks ago. Runs like a dream and looks great.

When I went to check it out with a rider buddy of mine everything worked fine. Well, the guy I bought it from left the parking light on over night and killed the battery, so I got it charged.

Now, I can't get the headlight to turn on, no high or low beam, and the tail light is extremely weak and doesn't come on at all when in park. The speedo light doesn't come on either. I checked the fuses and found that one of them was a 32 instead of the 10-12 recommended. Bought new fuses and switched em out. Nothing... The turn signals work properly as does the horn and when I unscrewed that section all the wires had good connection.

I know, I know, I need to get a volt meter if I am gonna start babying my new baby, but I am a student and money isn't what it use to be when I was working.

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am sure that taking it to the shop will cost me an arm and a leg for something that I could have done myself for much cheaper.

Did you jumpstart the bike from a running car by chance? If so, you could have damaged something. Other than this I think you need that volt meter to find out what's wrong. Harbor Freight sells something that will get the job done for only a few $.

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. Nathan,

It still kind of sounds like you have a dead battery. Get a cheap voltmeter and do some troubleshooting. You'll find lots of GS lovin' on my website.

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Thanks for all the replies!

Yes, I did jump it off of a car once.

I took it to Auto Zone and let them charge the battery over night.

Are you saying I should spray the ignition or the on/off switch for the headlight?
