A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey everyone, My 82 GS300L Failed to start yesterday, slow cranked about twice then dead batt. Checked the battery and it was dry as a bone. I know it was full about 3 weeks ago. I assumed it boiled all the water out. Following advice from a freind I checked the voltage of the batt. (after refill of water) with the engine running. At normall idle it was about 14.1 V, reved up a bit(no TACH) it was around 14.8V But the longer it ran the higher the voltage got, after about 10 minutes it was reading about 15.7V idle and 16.6V at higher rpms. And i could see the batt. starting to bubble so I shut it off. What is the standard Volts to the battery? And What could be causing my over voltage, regulator/rectifier? Any help is greatly appreciated, I am very new to motorcycles and have limited knowledge on them.

Your regulator/rectifier isnt any good. Throw it in the trash and replace it.
Maximum output voltage at any rpm should not exceed 14.8

Thanks Earl, Thats what I was looking for. I've been searching through some old forum qestions and see alot of problems with stators, could the stator still be ok if the reg./rec. is bad?

the normal max you should see is 14.5 volts, and that is on the high side.
your regulator is not doing its job.
one thing you should try before replacing the regulator rectifier, is to run a separate ground wire from the reg/rect mount to the battery ground terminal.
if the regulator is not grounded good it can not regulate the voltage correctly. Suzuki's method of grounding them is pretty poor.

I work on large trucks for a living, and I think the people who designed them, also own/owned GS's the alternators on them are bolted directly to the engine (good ground) and they also have a very large separate ground cable as well.

I will definatley try that first, I'd much rather install a ground than pay the 143 bucks that they seem to cost.

The stator can be fine even though the R/R is faulty.

The $143 Electrex part is known to be a quality piece but if you have to replace the RR, consider a recycled Honda RR. There are several threads concerning this. If you were a regular I'd make you look for them yourself but since you're new I'll make it easy:
