    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Help!! Bike Playing Dead

A week or two ago had an incident where bike wouldn't start...don't know why but in my frustration I messed with (slapped) the kill switch and the lights on the dash came back up and I was able to start and enjoy my 82 GS1100G.
Talked with my brother who has a similar bike and he indicated that he had an extra kill switch and he would bring it to me next time we got together.
Last Tuesday (17th) great day (80's) had been riding instead of driving and when it looked like it might rain in the afternoon I decided to take bike home and exchange it for car. When I tried to start her all I got was a barely audible click and all the dash lights went out (I should mention that the neutral light which has always worked was not on before or after the click). Took the kill switch apart checked it all out, put it back together...lights on (no neutral) same result barely audible click and lights out.
I decided that I would wait for the replacement kill switch and install that and see what happened.
Brother Rob brought me his kill switch on Wednesday and I had time this morning (Saturday) to install it. It was fun...took my time, methodical...replaced machine screws etc that were issues...
When I tried to start her same result...what do I do now???
I should mention that I have put the battery on charger and have no reason to believe that it is discharged although I have not directly tested it...also the dash lights (not the neutral light) tend to come back on (not every time) if I move the bike (don't know why or if this has anything to do with problem).
Have a Clymer Service manual for GS850-1100 Shaft Drive - 1979-1984 and have not found anything yet for me to hold on to...
Perhaps it is a starter or starter relay issue??
Is frustrating for me right now and do not really wish this misery on any sibling GSers but if anyone has experienced anything like this please share your insights...to tell the truth I think I enjoy working on the old girl almost as much as riding.

If it's not the connection on your solenoid , battery or a dirty start button I'd clean the ignition switch out with WD-40.
 
Also it might be good to check and clean your fuses, and earth connections on the frame , it could even be a bad connection in one or more of the many plug in connectors. Use the wiring diagram in the back of manual.

Thanks for the advice...found a loose connection...made the repair and she fired right up....planning to take her out for a nice ride in the morning
