HELP - Shifter problem (almost there, though)

Hi all: I posted about this a while back and got some very good guidance on how to fix my down-shifting problem. Well the parts arrived today and I have the oil pan off and was ready to do the fix. There is no doubt what the problem is. As I dropped the pan, the hook end of the spring that attaches to the stopper arm came with it. However, the rest of the spring is nowhere to be found (unless it wound up in the sump strainer, which I am about to remove and check).

I have the replacement spring, but since there isn't one there now to guide me, where the heck does it attach?

It's hard to see what's going on with that photo. A high resolution photo would help. Upload photo to Photobucket or similar and then imbed the

In the photo you can see the end of the stopper arm and the hole where one end of the spring goes. Refer to the attached pic from the Haynes manual for this bike. The spring is no. 18, the stopper arm is no. 17 (lower left).

OK. So I had another look, and directly above where the spring attaches to the stopper arm there is a semi-circular raised area in the case (the bottom of this recess points down). I'm thinking the "rounder" end of the spring goes over and sits down in the bottom of this semi-circular notch, then the other goes through the hole in the stopper arm. Sorry, but I know a picture just won't work ... it's too far up inside the case. There is just nowhere else I can see, everything else visible are either gears or the shifter drum.

Sure would like to confirm, though before I button this up and go test it.

in a gs1000 engine the spring hooks over the rear selector fork shaft. dont know if its the same as an 1100 but it may be the same. hope this helps

It's a beautiful thing. After much agonizing, I just could not see any other place for that spring except up in that semi-circular notch in the case, so I closed her up, oiled her up, cleaned her up and took her out for a teat drive.

Yippee - kai - eh! (or whatever it is):lol:. My bike is whole again, and running in top form.
