    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

First, thanks to everyone on here for their help so far, especially Ray at the SHIM CLUB. I have a 1981 GS850G. The carbs were cleaned and bench synced by a professional on this site about 8 months ago. The carbs have had fresh gas and gas with Stabil added while they have been back on the bike. I did a valve adjustment per the instructions on this site and have sealed the airbox and added a new air filter.I put new boots and o-rings on both sides of the carbs. I have new plugs and have a good spark on all four. The bike starts with 3/4 choke on the first or second push of the button and I can remove nearly all of the choke to let it idle. It cuts out when I give turn the throttle. Cylinders #1 and #4 seem hot while #2 and #3 seem cooler using a spray bottle. Question #1 why is it cutting out when I give it throttle? #2 am I anywhere close to being able to do a carb sync? #3 is it bad for the engine to have two of the four cylinders appear to be running very hot? I have hours of searching on the site and can come up with little bits of answers but I need to be pointed in the right direction. I want to get this bike running and enjoy some fall riding on it.:confused:
The bike continues to start with some choke at first press of the button. The bike sounds like it is running great and cylinder #1 is still hotter than the others. I still cannot get rid of all the choke but nearly all of it. I can rev the engine if I do it as I push the choke to the off position. I put the bike on a carb sync tool with the gauges and all the needles fluctuated rapidly. I tried to adjust the idle adjust screw but nothing happens from all the way in to all the way out. I am totally confused and have no idea what to do next.

The pipes will get hot when it's running right, so, don't worry about that.

I'd verify that you're getting a solid spark on 2 and 3 first. Sounds like a coil could be acting up -or- you could remove the plug caps, snip a little off the wires and re-install them. You could be having some connectivity problems there.

If you have the manometer handy, go ahead and sync the carbs, it's not going to hurt anything and may well solve the problem. Perhaps your bench is off just far enough that it doesn't have enough air to operate the carbs.:)
 
Thanks LarryD, I actually replaced the coil wires and added NGK plug caps as advised on the site. I appear to have equal spark on all 4 plugs. I also disconnected all the plugs and ran each cylinder individually for a few seconds and they all ran fine. Any thoughts on the dying when giving it throttle?:confused:
 
Normally I'd say it was an air leak, but, you've stated that you've sealed the airbox and have new intake orings. So, I guess double check that there aren't any air leaks that's been overlooked.

Are you running completely stock ? Any mods at all ?:)
 
I am running completely stock, but will double check both sides of the airbox and elsewhere for a leak. Thanks again

more ideas on my 1981 gs850g

I need a few ideas on getting this thing running. I will be selling my house soon and need to get this bike running and out of here to park at work or it will have to go for parts. I think it is a great bike but my lack of mechanical knoledge is very frustrating.
 
Try keeping the choke on about 1/2 way and see if it will rev up then

This will tell you that it is running lean
