DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Here's one for you - Front brakes seizing but then worked

You don't replace the SS lines. Only the rubber ones, because they stretch out.

AFA the 79 M/C rebuild kit, I have only seen it one place. AplhaSports? I don't remember, but perhaps someone here who does know can chime in?

...
On the master cylinder, the top "hole" is nothing. Cleaned it out a bit more with a pipe cleaner and it doesn't go anywhere.

Thanks!

Nate

Yes, it does. There are two holes the pass through to the main bore. At the bottom of one of them is a tiny hole, about 0.5 mm. Congealed brake fluid will form a plug in this hole that looks like a blind bottom of the larger portion of the hole. Keep working at it with brake cleaner and a piece of wire from a stiff brush. Mine took a few doses of brake cleaner and digging before I was able to get the wire through. The fact that yours doesn't go through explains your brake locking up.

If you want the priciest parts on the planet, go to BikeBandit.
Otherwise, search elsewhere. Let me check out a couple of places for you. (I am waiting on tech support, which takes forever.)
Do you want all 4, or just the front 3?

Dang it! You know all...

That would be super helpful, thank you! I've been checking around and it's a whole new world out there.

I'm thinking just doing all four... might as well put the upfront investment into it if the price makes sense.

Thank you!!

O.K. You have a one year bike, so we may have to take some measurements and have some custom lines made up. I'll let you know. I take it the bars are stock?

And I do not know all, I started dealing with BB in the late 90s when I was riding an 81 KZ750E. Easy to deal with, but expensive and slow.

Believe so, but can't say for sure. Not sure what you mean by one year bike, but I was going to take some measurements and look around.

The 1979 GS850 was the first 850 manufactured. It changed significantly in 1980. Changes included - no more kickstarter, CV carbs, different brakes. The last one is the kicker for you. I have heard good things of this company AFA quality and price, but you will have to do the measuring and calculations yourself. If you had an 80 and up you might be able to find a pre-made kit, but not for your particular model year. Here is the listing, give them a shout
If I did my cyphering correctly, you should be able to get all 4 for $106.75.
They also carry 4 colours. I put black on my GS, clear on my GPz.

Great, thanks! If that price is right, that's a great deal.

Wow, didn't realize '79 was the first year and they changed a bunch of things the next. Definitely might explain why it's been difficult to find just about any part in that year.

Thanks again for all your help. I'm anxious to get it up and running again!

Yup. It is still a great bike, with all the good things that makes the 850 so popular, it is just that in 1980 Suzuki made all those changes for the entire GS line, the 850 included.
You should see all the folk that want that kickstarter, only to find out it is impossible to move over.

Yeah get your lines from Raymond @ Rennsport. A real nice gentleman and fast turn around. Both myself and Gatekeeper got ours from him and yeah the price can't be beat. I think mine came in at $108, all in and that was with 2 special swivel fittings that I needed.

You will not be disappointed.

Looks like you have things under control. good work sir.

Awesome, thanks guys!

Is PM'ing him via eBay the best way to go? I've been looking for some contact info or directions to order and not seeing much.

I figure I'll just PM him and go from there.

Great, thanks! Once I went to his site (that you sent me) I realized I had already emailed him today.

Perfect

Its a long weekend up here so don't be upset if he doesn't get back to you until Tuesday.
