A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have recently come in to company with a GS1000S (date on steering head says 3/78). I know that they were only true 1000S' in 79-80. Mine is blue and white, has the full dash with clock, 4 into 1 TT style pipe, 17" rear wheel (they were supposed to have 18" wheels except Germany). I am in Canada and haven't been able to verify if we got 17" wheels on the rear or not. I have read about the carb differences and I a lever actuated choke on the carbs and they are not CV carbs. It has chrome large signals, a flat seat with a square, non-raised, pattern. There is also a dual black pinstrip under the seat base, on the small amount of body work that runs the length of the seat. The gas filler cap is semi rectangular and the stripes go off the front and don't 'U' around the filler. The rear brake return spring is on the outside of the frame and the rear shocks have a handle that flips up to adjust preload and has 4 or 5 rebound settings at the top. HELP ME determine if this is actually what I hope it is or if it's just a replica. The side covers are mint and it cclearly states GS1000S, but they are easily swapped. Thanks in advance.

The experts will be along but i would guess the build date of 3/78 would tell you that it is a clone.
The rear shocks with flip-up handle are from an '82 Katana.
The black pinstripe on the seat trim is incorrect. The seat i have on my clone is stepped with a stitched diamond pattern. Supposed to be original.
Either way, we would like to see pics.

#4, just noticed after really looking that there is no 'chin' to this upper fairing....dead give away??? I just got it yesterday, traded for a gate to be welded up :)

Tank is definitely from a '78. Almost certainly a clone.

that's what I kinda have come to realize. Now the question is... do I restore the clone in all it's clone glory or make a modern retro with gsxr parts?? decisions....

Looks like a Frankenstein bike.
I could be wrong unless the swingarm is painted.

It's a 78 E model with the aluminum swing arm, aftermarket shocks, race header, some other fairing and paint job.

The only S bike parts are the dash and the side covers. The dash is valuable

Nice looking bike

Does it run Okay?

I just looked at your pics again

If that's a Pirelli Phantom tire on the front, don't ride this bike any farther than around the block. That's got to be at least 25 years old

And post up big pictures

You could sell off the instrument cluster on ebay to help finance the rest of the restoration. I'm not sure how much it's worth but most likely you can get several hundred dollars on top of what it will cost you to put a proper 1000 cluster on the bike.
