    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

High beam inop

I just switched out the headlight bulb to discover that wasn't the problem. My highbeam won't operate. Low beam is fine. Everything else works (turn signals, breaklight, taillight, etc.).

Is this almost certainly the L side switch?

I have an 86 550es my high beam did not work when I got it. I found a bullet connector had come apart under the tank.

Thanks. I'll have a look at that since I've been taking the tank off a lot lately.
 
Taking the tank off a lot lately eh? I had a few features on my dash go out one day; seems me taking off and putting on the tank loosened a connector just enough that it appeared it was connected, but the contact points weren't hitting.

Ultimately you just want to grab a wiring diagram and follow the wires through from the switch to the headlight. Could be a switch, could be the connection to the head lamp, or one of the connectors in between. Should be easy to track down =]

You can test the switch by disconnecting the connector coming out of the switch and connecting positive multimeter lead to the high beam wire, and negative to ground. Should tell you if any juice is getting through or not.
 
It has to be the switch. I have no voltage to the high beam either, and they share a common wire from the switch.

The screws holding the switch together are 'fused' and will need to be drilled/extracted. I will live with low-beam until I have the time.

If anyone is interested, it turned out to be a broken wire in the center of the largest bundle of wires, in the most difficult place to reach, with the most tape and insulation wrapped around it. At least the switch was OK.
