Hi,
It sounds like your air intake system needs some help. A high idle is
usually indicative of an air leak. There are several tutorials on my website concerning intake boot and O-ring replacement, air intake repair, airbox sealing, etc.
Here, let me give you and extra "mega-welcome". Go through the maintenance lists. Every item is critical,
properly cleaned carbs,
valve adjustments,
air intake system sealing,
charging system repair, etc. It's a 30 year old machine and needs a lot of TLC. Any shortcuts will lead to frustration.
All of the maintenance that has been neglected for the last 20 years must be done in order to have a good running motorcycle.
Anyway, let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'.
I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
