Any recommendations? I have an OEM top cover gasket at the ready and I'd like to make the valve clearance job easier next time around.
If i coat the new gasket in oil so it doesn't stick will it then leak?
I was also thinking maybe if i put a thin smear of flexible rtv sealant on both sides of the gasket and let it dry before assembly that would work.
What do you think?
:)

I think many guys use oil, wd-40, or grease. Thats the cheap and easy way without investing in any special products.

A thin smearing of your favorite grease is okay. Remember, if you're doing it right, you'll be removing the cover in around 3000-4000 miles to adjust the valves again anyway, so, it shouldn't be that difficult to remove again. Stay away from the RTV, it has a way of balling up and making it's way into the engine. :)

Yep, stay away from sealers, especially RTV. I will use WD-40, engine oil or Vaseline, whichever I find first. :D

.

Yeah, I hit my new valve cover gasket on both sides with WD-40 5 years ago. Its been fine for several valve adjustments since then.

Great, thanks for the replies guys, most helpful!
See you after reassembly :)

I like Permatex high temp silver anti seize on the bottom side. I still use silicone on the top and on the half moons.

I never tried the WD40 that sounds like a good idea. I just took mine off last weekend and it came off clean, I didn't put anything on it when I put it on 3 years ago.
I'm gonna try that though.

OK so all these gourous are preaching a regimen of lube or none.
I have succeeded mightily by using Permatex Black RTV on my joints.

It is pure and awesome stuff.

I've found two engines with oil pump screens plugged with RTV... If you must use sealant I recommend case sealer.

Agreed !

Although just as important is torquing properly. Just one bolt overtightened will start a leak or cause the gasket to stick :-s

This is good information since I am almost ready to re install my cover after a valve adjustment. That old gasket was petrified and the biggest chunk that came off was about an 1/8" long. Gasket...what gasket?

I used a couple dabs of RTV to keep the gasket down, while reassembling.
I pulled the valve cover several times, and never had problems with it sticking or ripping apart.
