Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Honda Regulator Modification

I have had a few requests for pictures of the wiring tie-in I did for my Honda Regulator modification so here it goes. The Red and Black leads from the Regulator need to be lengthened, soldering and heatshrink is recommended for that, otherwise here is a quick pictorial of what worked for me

Here is a closeup of the yellow jumper I made to tie into the brake switch wire

Nice job!
I have also added a SH323-12 ( CX-500) and retained the Honda RR
connectors.
What model RR did you install?
Charlie

1978 CX-500.

The bolt holes lined right up and the grounding wire was the same length as the Suzuki

Hey Duane,
Correct me if I am wrong. Were you along on Mark's Pa. Spring ride?
I was riding the Blue GS850L wuth the white Windjammer fairing.

I see you recognized the bike from the pictures!

Hmnn,
I actually remembered you and your bike from the ride. As my memory is fading with age, I am lucky to remember anything. The mind is the first thing to go.

so, I have a few questions with regards to this regulator swap:

Why does everyone do it???

What is the benefit/s of the swap?

Should I do it on my GS750B (1977)?

(I run a 90/100 watt H4 headlight)

The Honda regulator is a superior design and charges the battery better. Honda regulators are not really made by Honda, they wre produced by another company just as Suzuki bought regulators from a vendor. But the Honda features better regulation and a higher output voltage than the Suzukis. It is all a matter of design choices made by the manufacturer.

If your concerned about the health of the stator I would do the mod since the stator is more expensive and difficult to replace than wiring in a Honda regulator. I would expect the stator to last a long time with a Honda RR.

OK I got one of these from Ebay, it has 3 yellow wires to connect to the output of the stator, a red wire for the battery and a green wire and a black wire, which wire is for ground? The green or the black? I'm guessing the green one (industry standard for household wiring), am I correct?

Thanks so much.

The Honda R/R has the extra black wire that must go to a circut that is energized when the key is turned to "ON". Most of the suggestions are to connect it to the feed for the rear light. Make sure you use the running light and not the brake light wire. The Honda diagrams have the black wire connected to the coils or ignition. If you use the rear light it will energize the R/R if you ever move the key to the park setting. It probably won't hurt the R/R if you left it energized for a while with your key in the park setting but I don't know. The rest of the wires on the Honda R/R are three yellows that go to the stator, a red wire that goes to the battery and a green wire that goes to ground.

See my pictures for the hookup, make a jumper wire to tie into the brake light orange/white wire.

Doing this today, and just thought it could use a bump.

Sticky?
