    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

horsepower ratings

Anyone have a good source for the stock horsepower ratings on the GS bikes? I don't know what kind of power my trusty 80 GS450E is making.
 
Upper 30's at the rear wheel would be my estimate.

Here's a good old article on that bike.

Note: Look at the TQ/HP numbers in the list not on the graph. Peak HP 28.6 with 20.0 FTLB torque at 7500rpm. That's correct. The dyno graph on this particular test is showing double the actual numbers. Also, the TQ and HP curves are mislabled...all sorts of typos on that graph...The numbers in the list are accurate.

I used to own one of these. First bike I ever ran at the 1/4 mile. 14.7 at 90mph

Well somebody has to say it so I guess I will. GS450's are neat little bikes, but as for as horsepower goes, they are turds. That is all. :cool:
 
Most other sites have listed it as producing 43-44 hp, which I'm inclined to believe....not too shabby really, as it falls right around the respectable 100hp/litre benchmark of most Japanese bikes of the era. More surprising in that archive test, was the fact that they have it slightly quicker through the 1/4 than the RD400!

I had a 1980 GS450. It felt light, but in reality it only weighed about 120 pounds less than a 1980 GS1000 which had a little more than double the horsepower.
 
All I know is mine makes enough power for what I want (or at least it will when back together) :dancing:
 
I like 400's and have owned quite a few of them...

Honda CL360
Honda CB400T2 (Hawk)
Honda CB400F
Yamaha RD400
Yamaha XS400
Suzuki GS450

Also,
Kawasaki EX500 x 2
Honda VF500
Yamaha XJ550

All these bikes had enough power to get you into all kinds of trouble and even though I currently don't own a smaller bike I've still got a soft spot for them.

Anyone have a low mileage GS400 the want to get rid of?

No but I have a KZ440LTD and an XS400 id like to unload :)

Davel, thanks a million! I never dreamed of finding an actual article about this bike from when it was new. It confirms a lot of my actual experience with it. It doesn't have much down low, but after 4000 rpm it pulls pretty good. I have the rear suspension set on the hardest setting, and I replaced the front springs with Progressives. I'd like to get a more modern bike, but after all I've been through on and with this bike, I don't think I'll get rid of it even after I get a new bike. It's really a lot of fun, and you don't see them on the road everyday. When I road the Dragon with it back in 2002, I toyed with the idea of getting it on the dyno at Deal's Gap, but I decided against it. Very cool article!

From that bunch, the RD400 would be my 1st choice as a second bike today, for around-town entertainment....what a hoot!:twistedevil:
Honda CB400N/T for a more civilized, smooth ride. Have never tried the GS450 or the XS, but I'm guessing they are pretty close to the competition in feel & performance.

Dave lots of places have dynos now why not give it a whirl? In Victoria they charge $100 for 4 passes with a chance to tune between...... I'll be doing it once the motor is done....then you'll know!
