A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hot Stator Wires

Same thing. I get a time out error. Says most likely a problem with my hosting provider.

Well it looks like my stator is bad. I don't know if it was the new R/R or I missed something before. 2 legs to ground read ~25.0 VAC and one leg reads ~16.0 VAC to ground. So who do I order a stator from?

You will get several opinions on which stator is "best", but many of us have installed Caltric stators with decent results.

Electrosport (mine), Caltric, Ricks. Haven’t read anything bad about any stators from these 3, as long as you keep the connections clean, all should last a long time.

You don't measure the AC voltage in reference to ground.
Measure the three stator leads to each other. AB BC AC
Measure each of the stator leads for connectivity to ground (there shouldn't be any)... and a multi meter doesn't really have enough power to do this, I used to use a insulation tester designed for power transmission, in a pinch I've used household 110V AC. A multi meter has a 9v battery, at best, for power

I originally had measured the stator lead resistance phase to phase and to ground. I also measured VAC phase to phase and to ground. All tested good. If I remember correctly, if you measure leg to ground that means you have insulation breakdown. Unfortunately I'm retired now and don't have access to a megohmmeter any more.

Are there any tips to replacing the stator? I know about the 2 X 4 under the center stand.

I won?t argue with you, as I?m not an electrical engineer, but I did get contrary advice from one when i was dealing with the charging system issue. Link in my signature if you want to read it. Posplayr isn?t here anymore to explain it, but he did contribute a great deal to our understanding of the GS electrical systems.

Rick's and Electrosport stators are ~$150 while the Caltric is ~$38. That's either a lot of markup or Caltric is using cheap parts or methods. Glad to hear some have had good results though.

I'm sorry Rich but what are you referring to? My post about checking VAC to ground? If the insulation is good you wouldn't be completing the circuit. Right? I haven't been around motors for a number of years and I'm not as young as I used to be. But I am faster! :smug:

P.S. Never mind. I reread your post. But still, isn't that correct? I previously read about your charging ordeal and read it again. I saw several posts confirming reading VAC to ground but nothing about anything different.

It’s my understanding, from what I’ve been told, quite possibly wrong, that with the bike running, measuring VAC of any stator leg to ground should show zero, or nearly zero, voltage. That the OP is getting a sizable reading, as I did, was what helped determine that the stator was bad, even when it passed the smell test and looking for discoloration or breaks in the insulation covering the stator windings. Again, not an expert, not looking for an argument, always willing to learn. These things have to be dumbed down so us mere mortals can understand them.

Check the AC voltage leg to leg, and then check resistance leg to ground. Always did it that way.

I think you are right Rich. I thought you were responding to me but you weren't.

You can check resistance to ground and get 0 ohms. It won't test insulation breakdown because the voltage in your voltmeter isn't high enough.
