    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How critical are the springs on the pilot fuel screws?

I finally got the carbs back together, and after actually looking at the pictures in the nice .pdf on Cliff's site I noticed the pilot fuel screws have springs like my air screws do. My VMs did not come with springs for the fuel pilots from the previous owner(s). I'm a bit new to the concept, but are these springs basically there to provide pressure to keep the screw from backing in or out on it's own? If so I think I'll just buy a nice spring assortment from the hardware store. I'm just a little concerned there may be more to this than I'm looking at.

That's it. I've used Bic Clic springs in a pinch once or twice.

BUT if you use different springs, don't even think about bottoming out the screws by feel, it will feel different and the tips will get stuck for sure.
Do it by looking for the tip to show in the bore, when you see it, that's close enough.

Yes, the spring is supposed to keep the screw from losing its adjustment.
 
I bought an assortment, dropped in my new spring, screwed in the pilot, and ran into resistance. Back it out. Spring is still in carb and is stuck on something on the bottom. Turns out the old ones WERE there, they were just compressed to the point I didn't see them and they were seized in the bottom of the bore. Couldn't even reach them with tweezers or a bent fishing hook. Had to force my new spring in and turn it. Clockwise spring + counter clockwise spring made them interlock and then pulled them out. Good thing I bought the spring assortment though as a few were in rough shape.
