    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How hot is too hot?!

Hi everyone. This might be a total noob question, but since I've never had one of these bikes before (gs700es). How hot is the oil supposed to get on the temp gauge? I took the bike on the highway for the first time today and although I had a ways to go on the gauge, it looked like the oil was creeping up on the 210 degree mark after a 40 minute ride, only about 15 of which was at full-bore freeway speeds. I've never seen it go that high before. The engine fins were hot enough to boil spit. I've been having a few carb problems, which are being remedied through much trial and error, and I also found a little chunk missing in one of my intake boots today. It's just a little piece on the carb side of the clamp, but I should probably still replace it. Yay for having to buy new boots; I thought I was gonna get away with just o-rings. Also, right after the ride, the oil looked a little frothy. Not a ton, just a little skim of bubbles. Is that normal right after a semi-hard ride?

My rides are in 80 through 95*F ambient temperatures and I usually see running oil temperatures of 220*F and stoplight temperatures of 250*F
My highest recorded temperature to date is 255*F
I read somewhere the oil is good through 312*F (Castrol GTX 20W50)
I change my oil three times per year and I average 2800-miles per year.
 
I'm not sure of the oil temp. readings but to the frothy oil that doesnt sound right. I would change it and see if it happens again.
 
Oil temp is about right. On really hot days in Texas mine will run upwards of 240.
 
Agree. Mine runs 210 regularly. Heavy stop and go traffic (heavy on the stop) will drive the temp to about 240 pretty quickly.
 
Thanks everyone! Looks like I was worried over nothing. Must be that pesky 80 degrees and sunny we've been having all week! \\:D/
 
Fix that intake boot. Lean conditions will cause overheating.
By the way I'm from Canton. Raised in Canal Fulton. Got as far away as possible.*\\:D/
