Many Bikes...but none like mine????

Many Bikes...but none like mine????

I just recently purchased an 86 GS550ES. I was looking at all the bikes owned at one time or another and didn't see anyone with that bike. Has me a little worried. This is the first street bike I have ever owned. Anyone with some stories about this bike??

The GS550E and ES models from 83 - 86 are pretty much the same. You might find it'll be a bit finicky under 3K rpm and it loves to play 7K and higher. The bike is very light and can be flicked in the corners with ease. Being an '86 it's not really a 550cc bike but a 572cc bike... a little extra bang for your buck. While not as flighty or high strung as some of todays 600cc bikes it has pretty good power. As long as you ride within your limits and love to open the throttle up you shouldn't have an issue "keeping up"... You can eek a little more power out of it with a jet kit and a 4 into one but re-jetting isn't always an easy task and I suggest that you make sure everything is working 100% or as close to that as possible if you decide to try it.

You people are amazing. I feel like a bumbling newbie by comparison. I started riding about 3 yrs ago. My 1st bike was a Yamaha Route 66, a 250cc Virago with a different name. I outgrew it fast and sold it though I wish I hadn't, it was fun. I traded up to a Suzuki Marauder, which I'm sorry to say I hated. I thought it handled like a wheelbarrow and had no low end at all. I then demo'd a 2005 Sportster and fell in love. This is the bike that made me enjoy riding again (the Marauder really was not fun to ride) and so much so that I decided to start riding to work! I work in NYC, and parking a Harley on the street is not a good idea, so I got a GS450 recently for that very purpose. It's a great commuter and I don't worry about its being stolen or knocked over, since it's 23 years old and showing its age...but hey, who isn't?

Well I am up to 2

started with a 77 GS750, rode that for a while and blew a piston ring. I was shopping around and found an unbeatable deal on my second bike a 95 Katana 600, Which has become my rider while I do a full resto/mod on the GS (look in tech this winter I assure you my misadventures will be at least somewhat entertaining)

My addiction started with a FOX minibike 3.5HP upgraded to a 5HP alot like the Rupp's.
Next was a 72 Kaw 75 DYNAMITE so I could beat the TRAIL 70 and QA 50's
Then a 73 TAKA 100 made by Rockford anyone have one of these
Then it was time to hit the streets that started with a Blaster
72 H1 500b ,73 H1 500d,74 H1 500e Named Snap Crackly Pop,74 H2 750b done by Paul Gast,73 H2 750a,69 H1 500,72 S1 250, TM 250,76 1000 goldwing what a slug, 59 Sportster heres were the GS comes in 80 GS1100e , LT 250R Quad broke my tailbone showing off , last year I picked up another 72 H1 500b 4000 mile all stock and nice, last week I got a 71 H1 500 for parts out of a barn. still have most of the tripps and the GS. Thats it but I hope this list keeps growing Tom

No where near what mcyclenut owns.

1) 1979 49cc Solo Moped
2) 1968 CB350 Honda
3) 1985 150 Elite Honda (Scooter)
4) 1984 650 Heritage Special Yamaha
5) 1984 750 Virago (still have)

Due to the mcycle collection there is NO ROOM for anything else. Just barely get my bike in the garage. Poor thing feels strange surrounded by Suzukis......

I'm so new that my list is short

I'm so new that my list is short

I'm a college student and have only been riding for the past 3 years so my list is short.

1. 1976 Honda CJ360t Bought in April 2002 for $500 -Sold May 2004
2. 1978 Suzuki GS750E 17k miles bought for $640 in Nov. 2004-Present

These bikes seem to have very different personalities but I have liked them both. The CJ was fun to zip around town on but a pain to take on longer trips and it did not handle very well. I did like that it was lightweight and easy to ride.

So far the GS has been great. It handles much better, its so smooth and easy to ride on the highway. It feels like it is just floating along. I have only put about 400 miles on it so far. I have had to garage it recently to put on new sprockets and chain as well as new tires. I'll take it out for the first time with the new tires tonight. It should be a big improvement over the old tires that were on it. I can't wait to add to this list.

Yea, I had trouble selling my Mobylette Motobecane too but I did manage to unload it eventually. I think it was a 1963 as it was new and that was the year I got it. It really did teach me a lot about working on vehicles.
