To go fast, all those fancy parts are great, but all I have to do is wash mine.

I don't know the BHP, never had it on a dyno. It has the later large port head. The head has been fully flowed, has oversize inlets but standard exhaust valves.
What Sean said about our "tracks" over here is true. I went to York raceway one time, it rained and there was deep puddles of water lying on the track - that shows how uneven it is (was?). At North Weald I was shot off the seat by a bump in the left-hand lane - this was just about 400 yds out! At Avon Park, I was told by one of the Top Fuel guys how to ride it - that was to go flat out through the finish lights and keep it screwed on until you had passed over the cross runway. The theory being that you would take off on the bumps but land well past them, whereas if you turned the throttle off the front suspension would compress, and when you hit the bumps you would have no suspension left and thats when the trouble starts.

Paul, that is still impressive MPH. My GS1000 2v sports 1085cc, turbo'd at 18lbs of boost on one of the older small port heads and dynos 188hp at the rear wheel. So far has been 5.88 @120mph in the 1/8 mile, with more gains in it as tuning and riding develop further. All this with 285 lb rider. I imagine it would really sing with a normal size rider.

I suppose I do have a bit of an advantage there, I weighed about 170 lbs then! Also don't forget it was a 1238cc. I'm a firm beleiver in the old adage "theres no substitute for cubes" The other thing I was running 100 octane fuel.

If your over 140 in the traps your doing great!!! Good luck in helping to keep the sport alive!

I was thinking about running my bike on the drag strip this summer. Any tips on how to do well?

Ihanscom, tell me about you bike and ill tell you what worked for me. I raced my bike with stock chassie and small stock tire and my style came out of necessity from having those limitations.

Very small in comparison to what's been listed here. I have a pretty much stock GS700es I'll have a 4-1 on it, and the jetting to match shortly, maybe some k&n pods if I can swing it. It's a small 130 in the back, but I don't think traction will be my limitation.

I ran with a 130 on the back of mine and due to the mods traction was a huge problem. The first thing you have to decide is if you want to race to go rounds In wich case consistency is the most important thing. or If you just want to squeeze the best et out of you bike. One of the cheapest mods that will help is gearing. The right way to do this is to increase the rear sprocket ( this avoids chainwrap that can cost you hp) but its much cheaper to decrease the size of your front sprocket. and the results are good. You want to use all of your gears in the 1/4 mile and be at redline when you cross the finish. You also are going to have to get used to high rpm launches slipping your clutch.( if you go to your dragstip on a practice day you will get more runs in) You will shave alot of miles off your clutch but it is the only way to get a good et with a stock chassie. dont worry about heating your tire just drive around the water pit. The best thing to do is once you get to the dragstrip find someone with a bike that is simmilar and ask questions, most racers are willing to help. with practice you should be in the mid to low 12 second range but dont be dissapointed if yoiur first few runs are in the 13 second range. I started drag racing a kz 650 in 1980 and my first run was 14.7 two weeks later i had the bike running 12.6 just by gearing , jetting,(jet for open exhaust) and learning to drive.

Hi Everyone,
I know a lot of you know my bike, but to those who don't, here it is. Our 79gs1000 2-v is now at 1260cc and about 180 h.p. I run huge Web Cams and a severely ported head, Lectron carbs, JE pistons, etc. The block, cylinders and head are all stock Suzuki.
This bike runs 9.18 at 148 m.p.h. It is naturally aspirated. It has run under 5.80 in the 1/8 @ 115. The best 60 fts. is a 1.26. Our secret (and I won't divulge my settings) is in the lock-up clutch. I have it set so that when you launch, it "wacks" back on the wheelie bars and carries the front wheel all the way through 1st gear. And believe me before we got all our settings right, this bike was a MONSTER to ride. It would launch and bite you on the ass before you would know it.
Now it is the most reliable race bike I have ever owned with over 300 runs on the motor which has NEVER been apart. The leakdown showed between 2&6% loss. Amazing!!!
Trust me, the old 2v motors can hold their own against any modern machinery out there. I'm 51 yrs old and can see me running it until the day I retire.

Paul, I've viewed your web site before and appreciate the effort you've put into your program. Nice job. Your bike and mine are very similar in performance, but do it considerably different. One question, what primary drive gearset are you running and what final drive sprockets do you use? My turbo GS1000 2v dynos 188hp at the rear wheel, stock helical gears on primary drive, 15t/43t final drive and 1.40 60' times. Would appreciate any comments on the best way to lower the 60' times.

Hey Massakins,
I run stock primary gears, don't let anyone tell you to go the more expensive route. My final drive is 16x49. My bike is peaking out in 5th gear as I run through the traps. Since I run a little 5.5" tire with such hi horsepower, I use a lock-up clutch. I launch at about 5000 and the tire hardly spins one revolution before the tire grabs. This really is my secret. What are you using? The lock-up is the reason for the great 60fts. I can get technical for you if you or anyone else needs to know why this clutch set up is the way to go for me.

Very good times!! I've thought about a turbo but have heard it's more complicated on the old gs' because of the low pressure oil pump. Do you use a remote supply for the turbo then? Please give me more details.

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul,
The turbo oil supply is fed from the oil sender galley. Also using the 750 oil pump gear set. Hasn't been any problems so far (knock on wood). The drawback is that there's only enough oil pressure to feed the turbo, can't use a top end oiler.
My only dislike of the turbo setup is that it's very sensitve to temperature changes. Makes a lousy et/bracket racer, for me anyway.
I have the single stage adjustable wastegate, the newer multi stage with an electronic controller would probably be the way to fly once you got some reference data.
Mike

Mike,

What carb are you using on your turbo. I've been running the Mikuni HSR42 (flatslide with rollers) and found it very forgiving to different temperatures. Fuel pump helped as well. Still trying to optimize the accelerator pump but overall very pleased. What boost were you running during the 5.60 et in the 1/8?

Pat

Hi Pat,
I use the s&s super b and a holley red fuel pump.
The 5.60 was at 16 lbs. Gearing is 16/39, so it's kinda tall for 1/8 mi.
I thought about trying the mikuni, but since i rarely ride on the street anymore (no r. suspension) i couldn't justify the cost and the extra jetting hassels. Jetting gives me headaches, and the s&s is almost as simple as a rock.
