    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How Serious Is it?

I just replaced the front brake pads on the '80 1100E. One of the caliper nut boots is torn almost all the way through. It's item 10 in the pic. The rubber must have been deteriorated for quite some time. So I'm thinking it's probably not critical to replace it. What do you think?

It's there as a dust/water protective boot. I would look at replacing it at some point, as extra dirt will cause wear on the pins and moisture will cause rust.
Having said that if it's removed now and then and cleaned and regreased it will still go for ages.
Put it on you list to do when you get around to it.
 
The above post is probably right, but if it were me, I would replace them if at all possible, especially if your boots were greasy and dirty when you took your caliper apart. You'll get by, but with sliding calipers, if they move less freely it affects your braking. Check your pins, the shiny covering should still be there too. If the shine is worn off, (assuming yours are like mine), its getting time to think about replacing those as well. I've replace the boots on my 850, but not my "worn" pins yet. Hopefully this fall.

the hassel is that those little boots are expensive! :(
 
IMHO

Brakes are one of the components I don't screw around with.
It's either done right or the bike is parked.
If this is a dust/water protective boot, maybe........maybe not.
If you let it go, it could cause more $$$$ repairs later.

Do it right the first time and no worries.
