On my GSX400 with a dipstick, how do I correctly check the oil?
Do I just set it on top, or do I screw it in all the way?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Screw it in and have it on the center stand.
Sorry but this is wrong, you don't screw in the dip stick.
You need to run the engine to circulate the oil and then wait approx. 1 min. for the oil to settle. Bike on center stand.

Well, never had a bike with a dipstick. Every other engine I've had with a dip stick, it had to be seated all the way. I was just using common sense that must not apply here.

So I checked the oil after it was fully warmed up and level and it turns out it's just past the F mark. When cold and level it's right in the middle. So by this information, I'm supposed to drain out a little oil until it's in between the marks when it's fully warmed up?

If I'm not mistaken, after you circulate the oil it should be LESS than just checking it after it's been sitting a day or more... What you posted seems counter intuitive :-k
Agree. Level will increase when the bike sits for a while. That's why Suzuki specs the level after one min.

Well, checking oil isn't that hard and I didn't screw it up.
When it's cold and level it is in between. When fully warmed up and sitting level after a minute or two it's at the F mark.
Edit: Perhaps the oil expands when it's hot thus giving a 'fuller' reading. It's my only explenation.
