How to find the original color?

I got 82 gs1100e that someone had repainted in the past but I got a new tank and front fender but is there a way to tell the original color by Vin or something else?

If I had to guess the bike was the dark blue

You can slowly wipe layers away with some acetone till you get to the original base coat. Most people don't paint the underside so there may be day one color there as well..

If the bottom is OEM maybe a supply house can match it for you. if you acetone down to the original color and can very carefully get a patch about 4 inches square on the top of the tank exposed the supply house can try the scanner on it and make an exact match nthat way too.

The available colors are in the parts finche. Narrow down that list and then look for a color cross reference thread that will give you a cross matching color code.

The 1982 Suzuki GS1100EZ was not offered in any shade of blue however, the 1983 GS1100E had a not so available dark blue. The colors offered in 1982 were Candy Fancy Maroon and another color they called something like Suzuki Fantastic Gold Metallic, which is actually silver. I never could figure out why they would call it gold when it's obviously silver.

Service part paints Suzuki used to sell for the 1982 1100E.

Last three characters are the paint color code.

Well I have sanded down the paint and found it to be a dark blue but the Vin and date code on the bike are definitely an 82. So did someone swap out tank and plastic at one time then? But I also have another 82 frame that was stripped when I got it so don't know the color of that one.

So dark blue wasn't an option in 82 but in 83 it was?

If the date on the VIN label is after October of 82 its an 83..they stamped the month and year it was built but that doesnt mean it isnt a next year model..follow me here???

First, yes, the tank and all body parts are totally interchangeable between the '82 and '83.
Second, there are quick ways to tell the difference between the '82 and '83, the single most noticeable difference is that the engine on the '82 is silver with chrome exhaust and on the '83, the engine is blacked out with black exhaust. Another noticeable difference is the rims. A not so noticeable difference is the rear set brackets, as far as I know, the rear set brackets are not interchangeable between the two years.
This is my '82

This one is an '83

Notice the differences between the engines, rims and especially the rear sets.

If you can, please post a picture of yours and there are many here that can tell you in seconds what you have.

Rear set brackets are NOT interchangeable between EZ/ED without changing the frame. This is the quickest tell.

All this discussion and it is the first I realized the thread is about an 1100E :p

The engine is painted silver and build date code of 81 on both frames I've got. Here an old picture before I got the bike. Someone had painted like a purple fade over the tank but the rest look like just single color of blue

Snowflake Wheels, silver engine and chrome rear sets:
That is an 82 ez.
color is not stock.

Definitely an '82 and like Jim says, definitely not stock paint. Like I stated previously, the only two colors offered in 1982 were Candy Fancy Maroon and Fantastic Suzuki Gold (or whatever it's called and it's actually silver). I can't say what the new color equivalent is for the Suzuki Gold (silver) but the Maroon is actually Inferno Red Crystal Pearl as worn by the 2010 Dodge Ram truck and the Dodge Charger. The whole discussion comes up quite often about the paint, here is a link to the most recent one:http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?249324-OEM-paint-color-1982-suzuki-gs1100EZ

EDIT: I originally thought that the seat was a Corbin but after looking at the pictures again, it looks more like the OEM seat but recovered.

The seat has been recovered with a Griptex sargent cycle upholstery, Also the bike has an 4 into 1 without maker printed anywhere on it.
