I wasn't happy with the spray oil so I went and got some Bel Ray. I cleaned my stock type UNI foam filter, saturated it, and squeezed out a good amount of the excess.

Does this sound ok? Or should I squeeze it out more thuroughly. I read some other posts and now I'm thinking I may have over oiled it.

I haven't had any problems doing the same thing on several bikes. I usually clean it let it dry and then pour an ounce or so of oil on it work it through the filter foam by squeezing the foam. The squeeze out the excess oil and reinstall the filter.

Mike's right......and any excess oil will probably drain out through the hole at the bottom of your airbox and leave a few decorative spots on the garage floor. :D

You don't need to saturate a foam filter with oil for it to work, a light spray will work well. Also it will keep your airbox cleaner and you won't have to buy oil so often.

I've never used one ont he street, but for dirt riding, we clean with gas, then apply the oil and squeeze out the excess. The inside of my airbox is nice and clean.

What is the proper technique for the K&N pod filters? I bought mine used, and they came clean and oiled, so I've never had to do it. Do you need special oil?

K & N sells a filter recharge kit which has cleaner, oil and instructions. I got mine at an automotive parts store. Not expensive enough to research whether other cleaners and oils would work.

Cool, Thanks.

Use the K & N brand filter kits, They are made especially for the filter

I just wash my K&N's in the kitchen sink. Pretty warm water with lots of dish detergent to cut the old oil. I whisk them around in the water to knock the crud loose and a little light brushing with a soft paint brush. The small pure bristle brushes they sell at Home Depot and the like for about a buck work fine. Let the filters air dry then spray the gauze with a light, even coat of K&N oil and let them sit for an hour or so while the oil penetrates evenly. Occasionly spray a light coat on between cleanings. One can of oil lasts forever.

I agree with Billy here, exactly what I do and use. Had present can of oil for atleast 2 yrs now. :)

I probably only wash them every two or three years. Just freshen the oil every 6 months to a year. Part of the concept of K&N's is that they filter better with a build up of dirt. Just tap them a little to knock off the loose stuff and any chunks of debris.

Agree with Billy. I am probably due to clean mine this year. I have had a bottle of K&N oil since the mid 80s when I put them on.

I use a can of "air duster" to blow out any loose particles after a good cleaning. this helps dry it before putting on the red oil and it's not under very heavy pressure so you don't have to worry about tearing those expensive filters. Seamed to work great!

After reading this,I figured I would check my air filter out.To my suprise! There was no air filter on my bike.I never though to check it because the guy I got it from had just cleaned the carbs and rebuilt the petcock.I though for sure that he would have put in a new air filter. This bike sat for 10 years and he had just gottin it going.I called him this morning and told him.He said he had forgot all about it and that he had put about 800 miles on it himself before I got it from him.I've put almost 2000 miles on it since I bought it.It still runs like a top,a bit cold natured in the morning.
Anyway,,Where is a good place to order one?The local shop said 20.00.
Can I get one on the net cheeper?
