A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How in the world do you get the centerstand return spring stretched out enought to hook it on the centerstand????????????????????????????

A Mack truck maybe?? :)

unbolt the centerstand, hook spring up then pull on centerstand and line up the bolt holes. thats the way i was able to get it on there.

I tried that Rick, when I do that I cannot keep it pulled up tight enough to line up the bolts. I also had to drop the mufflers to get the bolts aligned, that was a job in itself!!

Thanks for the reply!
Michael

Hey Michael - I hope you get it mounted. This is just one more reason why I hate center stands! I just HAD to say that. 8)

I'll get it eventually!!

Prop the stand in the up position so the springs will only have to be their shortest. Hook one side in postion then grab the other end with vise grips and pull towards you. You can get the most muscle into by pulling on the spring. They can be a pain.

I'm with Billy on this one . Used that on a heap of bikes. the other thing I used was a coat hanger ( wire) and double wrapped it around the hook of the spring and used the remaining length as purchase to wind around my hand and pull!

cheers Kat

Thanks guys!
That is one stout spring I can tell you that!!

I hooked it on a huge nail drove into the floor joist in the basement and hung on the other end with a pair of vise grips with all my weight,

Did not budge!! And I am at 195lbs!!

I will try that tonight.

I haven't had to try it on the GS but I've had good luck using Brake spring pliers with various other bikes. I do it the same way they did except use brake spring pliers. The hook end goes on the spring and then the other end is used to find something past the point where I have to attach the spring and then pry the spring over and hook it using the pliers.

This gives quite a bit more leverage than just using vice grips but I always seem to have to try it a few times to find the place to pry against that will bring the spring to exactly where I need to go.

Tip - Centerstand Spring Install

Tip - Centerstand Spring Install

Not sure if I ever did this in the past, but I have seen somewhere the spring made to extend by jamming a quarter between spring coils - about $5 worth should be enough to extend the spring sufficiently. Then just extend the centerstand and collect your laundry money! :)

Now that's a good trick!

I blacksmith as a hobby, so I just made a big spring puller out of an old set of forge tongs... Works fine for me,

Also...one can just put the bike on the side stand or small hydrolic jack, get a long, strong screwdriver or bar, and pry the spring onto the hook...just as one does to get the return spring mounted on drum brakes...

Centerstand Spring Installation Tech...

Centerstand Spring Installation Tech...

...yes, but come on, you HAVE to admit that the "quarter-in-the-coil" technique has a certain "VOILA!" flair...not to mention the jackpot soundtrack....

yes...I almost wished my centerstand spring was disconnected, so I could fiddle with the quarters! It's a pure genius idea.
