I belive the worst that could happen has...

Sounds like you'll be on the road in no time. Hope all goes smoothly from here on out.

Happy to hear that they arrived on time. :)
I just hope that you can change any plug ends that might be a little different in the harness.
I am running a harness from a 79 GS1000L in my '82 GS1100G so I know you can make it work. ;)
(Yes, a points harness in an electronic ignition bike)
At least those two 550's are both electronic ign.
The stator looked great and the other parts were just dirty.
We are all behind you.

Thanks Guys! your all the best! I'll keep you posted on any developments. I've made custom ECU wiring harnesses (wire by wire) for custom engine swaps for fuel injected cars(mostly Subaru's with the EG33) re-wiring my ignition system is a cake walk in comparison.
Keep you all posted! Thanks again Eric!

Well worked on the Ignition system on the bike a couple more hours today. So I was having issues creating a constant ground/pulse under crank off the left coil harness. So I went through and through the entire harness and followed good wire all the way to the healthy signal generator (thank god!) to the CDI. So out of curiosity I installed the old CDI just to see what I couldn't figure out... Well the situation switched! Now only the left side will give a ground and a pulse under crank and the right side is dead with no ground or pulse. I think both of the CDIs are partially broken... LOL I was thinking I could use both CDIs to get both sides to pulse... but I'm just better off getting a new CDI huh. What are the compatible models?
Thanks...

You should know better than to try this sort of thing on Friday the 13th :)

You what would look great on that bike? The cafe fairing you sold me last year! I'll even give it to you because you've had enough bad luck with that bike already. I won't be using it and shipping it would be a pain. Take it please.

LOL
Lee we have been passing that fairing back and forth.. Yeah I'll deffinitely take it back! How about this time I come to you. Off Sunday shoot me a PM and I'll swing by!

OK SO Coils came in today while I was at work, I plan on hooking them up tonight and seeing if I can't get a spark.

I was looking online and I can't seem to find a Ignitor for my bike for less then $200 Shipped. :/

So if the stock system can't be revived I was looking into this as a viable option
DYNA S Ignition system

From what I can gather I don't need an Igniter for this setup... Can anyone shed any light on this? Experience with these guys?

Keep you updated of my progress...

That is what I have heard from people on this site.
Contact Posplayr to get the facts. ;)

So I folded... I worked on the bike for the better part of 4 hours after work tonight trying to get the sucker to spark... No dice. I'm about 98% certain that both of the ignitors I have are toast. I also believe the pickups may have been compromised... So I purchased a Dyna S Ignition system after doing some heavy research about it's compatibility with the bike. Many people have used them on the same year and model as my GS550L so I belive this will cure the ignition headache...
My R&R came in! So I plan on doing that some point Monday or Tuesday, Stator is coming out and slapping on the Stator from 7981! I have run through the other circuts and we are looking really good! Just replacing light bulbs, gotta crack the dash to get to the dash lights but all the bulbs work, directionals works (grabbed a simple cheap 2 prong flasher from the auto store). Hoping by the end of next week she will be rolling under her own steam!
Pics to come of the progress! But I'm hitting the hay now.

I got my Dyna S in today!!! I made a custom ignition wiring harness for the new coils and and Dyna. After finally sorting out all the burnt wires, blown lightbulbs and replacing almost all the electrical components the GS550 Fired up and now works 100% electrically!!! 14.2 volts at 5,000rpm at the battery!!! She held an idle for about 10 minutes then it died out, stayed alive if you kept the revs up. It's a Carb issue, pulled the carbs and there filthy. No biggie going to go through all the mega welcome stuff. Checked valves and all to spec. So after cleaning up the carbs bike will be ready to ride everyday again!
Thanks again for evrything you guys!!! Your all awesome!

Had I visited this thread earlier, I could have given you some feedback on the Dyna S for that particular model :D

Anyway, you've probably already figured this out, but the Dyna S 3-2 rotor + spacer combination is usually a bit too tall for the factory EI bikes, and when bolted in will not allow the rotor to advance (hmmm, maybe that's intentional and why their instructions say to time to the full advance mark even at idle :-k ). Anyway, at least one person I've consulted with didn't notice and had idle issues. Swapping out the spacer for a thinner washer did the trick for him. Personally I sanded down the top of my rotor by about 0.7mm.

LOL Well funny you should state that... I used the Search feature (Noobs apply) and ran into your thread with the fellow having issues timing his 550 for idle. I used you advice and pictures as reference to setting up my Dyna S. It fired right up with no adjustments FYI ;). As of now I have the rotor sitting in there with no spacer so it moves maybe an 1/8-1/16 of inch back and forth. I plan on grinding down the spacer or buying a thinner washer once I?m 100% satisfied with the timing so it allows the advancer to well advance without wiggling back and forth!

LOL So Thanks for unknowingly helping me out any way ;)
