I dropped a washer into the starter area. Do I need to get it out?

I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.
Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Returning Visitors
If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.
If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

How do I remove the starter?

That is in the service manual. But have you tried fishing it out with a small wire or a magnet?
+1 with Big Rich, use a metal pickup tool first or even a small pick to fish around in there.

Assuming that this is on the 450 in your signature, you have to remove the starter cover, but you will probably need to remove the carbs first. Once you have the cover off, there are two bolts that hold the starter in place. Remove them, lift that end of the starter, slide it toward the center of the engine.
What washer did you drop? Like others have suggested, it might be much easier and quicker to fish it out with a wire or a magnet, rather than removing the starter.

Close Steve, but even worse (IMO anyway).
Carbs can stay, but the cam chain tensioner needs to come out to get the starter motor out.
Definitely do the fishing first...

Forgot about that little detail, but it would be rather apparent, rather soon.
Don't have to remove either one to do the starter on the 850, 1000 or 1100 shafties.

A washer in a starter well will do bugger all it is a wee bit of metal.
Check the Positive side and realize that it is high up and in no danger of a dropped washer or bit grounding the circuit.

Yeah...i agree with JeepRusty. I cannot believe those words just came out of my mouth, but I don't see the problem. It's not going anywhere, and it can't get in the way of anything so what's the problem?

Duck Balls
Actually, make a small ball of duct tape with the sticky side out. Or a strip the same way- whatever shape works.
Stick it to the end of a screwdrive, piece of wire, needle nosed pliers...anything you like. A curved pick can be poked through it for a fairly strong "retrieval tool."
