i recently got a 87 kawi ninja 750, i cleaned the carbs up and got it running really good but i think i screwed up big time LOL. after riding from ohio to new york on my way back it was hard to start it needed to be really pushed to get it going, so after the 7 hours home it hasnt started and i realised it was really low on oil i added almost 3 quarts and it only holds 4.1 my step father says i prolly scored the cylinders and thats why it was near impossible to start losing alot of compression. if this is the case which makes sense is it worth rebuilding the motor and would it probably just need to be honed and new rings or would i need a set of .10 over pistons or go all the way and go .30 over or so and rework it? i dont mean to post kawi on a suzuki forum but ive been here for awhile and the company is nice:D

Have you checked the compression?
not yet i cannot get it running to get a hot compression check so i didnt tink it would make a reference because there is no manual i have found saying what it should be.

Dear, ran it low on oil...

there are some things you may also want to look at. if it has a plain bearing crank, did it score the either the crankshaft or bearings and had it sustained scoring to the head and camshafts.

sounds delicious im thinking its junk cause im a dummy lots of work for a cheap old toy that will be a very pricy old toy

If it was my bike I'd pull the motor and check it out during disassembly. Normally I wouldn't go right to that, but from what you described there's no way to tell the real extent of the damage by any tests, so why go through them.

Next time check your oil levels before each ride. It takes only a few seconds.

yea i guess it will just be my if i feel like it bike i have the now up and running gs750 :) so im good for the season. just loved the 160mph speeds and the crotch rocket feel

I agree with you with one small exception. I would pull the valve cover, if it is possible to remove without removing the engine, then inspect the camshaft for scoring. I then would borrow a bore scope to inspect the cylinder walls. if they both look ok, then chances are the rest may have survived.

It does have a plain bearing crank, and if it's picked up on a bearing, it's toast as these cranks crack when this happens.
Go straight to the core and drop the sump. Check what's in the bottom and on the pickup screen - if there's bearing material, look for another motor
If there's nothing there you got lucky & can look at the top end.

will do thanks for all the help guys ahh sump..... timely error of mine F**k me

it blew 180-200 on all four cylinders so im going to tear it all apart here tommorow and i got a spare motor for 120$from the moto junkyard it fires on starting fluid so maybe its a good motor :)

180-200 should be good. i'm not sure what the exact stock psi is but that's good compression. doesn't sound like you need new rings. might be bottom end... might be that it just doesn't like you any more and refuses to run for you out of fear of you running it totally dry! hehe, couldn't resist

i think its rings :(

i think its rings :(

well after all night of sitting it blew a wopping 90 -100 psi bone :( after a long push start it get right back to 180 ish area till it cools so im thinking rings as when i put a few drops of oil in the cylinders it gain about 25 psi wet  anyone know a good cheap place to hone and bore me out .30 over and then im going to go from the 12-1 compression to 8-1 and i just got a 83 gpz turbo digital fuel injection system so i have a project ahead. does anyone think a 14b stock dsm eclipse turbo is too much, i have one off my car that needs rebuilt so itll save me 300$? im thinking ill be trying it at 5 psi till i get used to it. if there are no objections i would like to put it in the projects forum? i think its going to be a marvel of work and i know i will have a abundance of questions.
thanks all for your help thus far, Jesse

Well, that sounds like a fun project, but that turbo will only work on the bike if the car's engine was about 750-850cc.

It is VERY critical to match the size of the turbo to the size of the engine. The bike's 750cc (or whatever it ends up being with the overbore) is simply not enough to drive a turbo that is meant for a ... what? ... 3000cc engine?

Other than that, it sounds good. :o
