Tmwnni and I have hit a snag on my bikes big night... least it was supposed to be. We got the tank and everything on but I am leaking gas the second I turn on the fuel valve.. it is leaking from the fuel line going into the carbs.

I suspect when we were reattaching my new fuel line which was stuborn to go back on that we might have dislodged the fuel attachment on the carburators or broke it =(... we rotated the fuel line T Fitting that supplies the other boys with fuel to ease putting the new line on and that is what I think happened...

...it is 4AM here and I just had to be dropped off at my house since I has all my gear with me to ride the bike home.. and I work in three hours ](*,) but I had to get this out on here to hopefully get the most amount of replies I can so by work ending after ten hour day I will be reading and getting ready to DECLARE WAR on this leak. I really hope it is somethign simple but I want to hear all the othe rpossiblities in case my researching fails me...

I am downloading a copy of the CV carb rebuild from bwringers nice website right now so I can study it as well...

Sound off...

Wanted to take it on road trip leaving friday morning too ... is there anything else this gas can be coming from.. as I said the second fuel flows from the petcock it starts dripping down the bowls of the carbs.

I need WARP SPEED guys...

ENGAGE!

End Star Trek Rant....

Captain,

When you rotated tee was it like stuck a little or did it rotate freely ? If the tee isn't broke could it be the 4 orings on tee ,where the fuel is coming from? If you were using old fuel line ,I've had the inside separate and roll up as you are pushing it on the barb part of tee before and cause a nasty little leak. May the force be with you, Oh WRONG galaxy  . Good luck !!

is it one of those trick brass tees or a rubberized one? i find out today if my old rubberized one holds water..

i have heard that some teflon tape wrapped can work to seal leaks, in a pinch, worth a try if you gotta get riding

As I recall, the T has a rubberized coating on it that forms a seal when it's installed. If it's leaking you either have to replace it (hard to find discontinued OE part, or very expensive aftermarket version), OR take your chances on running the old one after wraping it with a few layers of teflon tape. The tape will most likely work if the rubber on the T is not cracked.

Good luck.

One of mine, a '78 750 fuel would leaked if it was dried out, but after fuel got into the tubes it was fine, I guess the rubber swelled up and sealed. Took about a day, but it was not a very bad leak. When you put it together did you use anything to lube the seals or did you stick it in dry? Vaseline or something? Did the rubber part of the fittings look soft and pliable?
Were the holes clean and smooth?

I hope it is just a Oring.... on it

I hope it is just a Oring.... on it

I'll go down the list here...

First, the tee was tight and no it did not move easily, so it is not free spinning or anything, I am really jus thoping when it was shifted that the orings tore ... I do have a fuell rack of spare carbs I bought last year so I do have a single replacement for the fitting itself if it is in fact the thing that is broken. I have not removed the carbs from the bike and just did a visual inspection via worklight and diagrams of potentials...

Second, Why in the heck would they discontinue what could be considered such a important piece? ... that is just stupid... but I'll cross my fingers it is just the orings on the tips of the connectors, or that my spare rack has one that is not broken.

Third it is the rubber one that I am fairly certain, .. I have not disassembled the carbs fully since I got this bike but I had everything else cleaned... *sigh*

Forth, I was just installing the fuel line onto the nipple...I had not disassembled the carbs prior. that nipple was moved around about 90* ... so after looking at the possibilities i am thinking orings on end of that nipple got busted...

If the rubber sleeve on the fuel nipple itself is torn I don't like the idea of using teflon tape to repair...fuel dripping on hot engine.. don't feel like possilble burnt tale.

Sounds like I will be disassembling my carburators earlier than expected... but I Really want to ride so I'll rise to the challenge.

First thing is first though... I am going to remove my carbs and pour fuel down the fuel line that is on it and see if I can find where it is coming out.. with them off the bike I think it would be easy enough to see... I really hope it is not terminal....If that fitting is toast I guess I will have to be extremely careful when I take the one off my other rac of carbs... *crossing fingers*

UPDATE on parts YAY... I'm not screwed!

UPDATE on parts YAY... I'm not screwed!

Well there is a light at the end of the tunnel....

Z1 has a Fuel fitting.. brass for $5

is there any other models from say a kawisaki or something that I can get a fitting from as well.. they all look the same to me ...

if I have to remove this fitting and end up replacing it I think I want to get a couple of rebuild kits... the Z1 ones any good... I'll look into the cycle orings guy as well

That brass T that Z1 sells is not designed for O-rings thus I don’t think it will work. Z1 does sell a replica Kawasaki T for VM carbs, but I don’t think that will work with your CV carbs. There is a company that sells a nice brass T fitting but they are very expensive – about $35 (motorcyclecarbs.com or something to this effect).

First off, verify your carbs are leaking at the T. If they are, pull them off and pull everything apart. You can get O-rings from cycleorings.com. Replace the ones you can. For the T, replace it with your spare if necessary, or you can try to wrap with Teflon tape as long as the T is not cracked.

Yeah.. I got my bubble burst on that one spacing is slightly different on teh KZ from Z1... ***t Z1 did suggest I use the liquid rubber from autoparts store by applying a few coats to it letting it cure and such... I am goign to verify the leak location tonight when I remove the rack and pour fuel down the line... maybe it is somethign else but with how we turned this fitting around like it was... woudl say %75 chance that could be it... I'll post back tonight if I ge the testing done.. else it will be later sunday since I am goign camping for weekend and now being forced to take the car instead.. crappy!

Sold my lathe a few years ago and regret it terribly. Fortunately, I know an outstanding machinist that loves to help on little G jobs. He made the section of this T that takes the O-rings and I grafted on the barbed top.

Wow, my carbs must have heard you....Tmwnni and I got back from camping with our two friends who passed their riding course BTW...and went right for the GS and pulled the carbs out and dropped in more fuel... No leak... not a drop! ...

We then moved onto my coils..newly modded and untested... got a good spark there though my plugs are black and sooty looking... I'll swap them out later *cheap enough*

Then we put it together and I left the airbox off and played with the choke some and got a burp from the engine...

Put airbox back on and secured everything and after shifting more gas into the engine the bike fired right up... not any leaks to speak of... \\:D/ I took off for the gas station and filled the tank up with fresh fuel... I am so excited!

Still puzzled about the leak but I will keep an eye out for it but my GS is back on the road once again... I will get pics with the new painted work and some nice sunny backgrounds for you all.

Later... I have to go out riding :-D

Possible...

Possible...

A float was stuck for a moment.

There is a thought too.. I will drop some seafoam in the next couple tanks and make sure i give it a good rip to blow any buildup out...

still this leak happened when we went to prime the carbs... gas never made it in completely.. I mean I should have been able to fill them and idle the bike briefly with fuel in the bowls... couldn't even get that... even when bumping it... since we shifted that T-fitting around I think that with the cold winter we had they were a little cold and hard.. jus tneeded something to drink =)

Good Nights
