DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

this might be a stupid q: but does the 1980 gs850gl only have one or does it suppost to have 2 calipers im stumped trying to find pads for them but i cant find the round pads??

'80 850 GL should have two calipers on the front using the rectangular pads. Round pads ended in '79, at least for the shafties.

that is weird i only have 1 but the title says its a 1980 what the heck

Recheck the manufacture date on the headstock plate....a buddy of mine bought 2 '80 850s, one to do up and one parts bike. He ordered carb kits for a '80, and got the kits for BSs.....VMs were on the bike, so he checked the date stamp.....'79s.
Previously, of course, I was all excited, as this would have been a good parts source for my '80. When I finally had a look at his bikes, it was obvious that a lot of parts were different, including brakes. Dang...

Titles are not infallible.

Look at the neck of the frame for the ID plate to see what it says. The serial number will be in the lower right corner and should have a model year designation after it. If the model year is N, it's a '79. If the model year is T, it's an '80.

You can also look in the upper right corner of the ID plate to see when the production date was. The '80 bikes might have started as early as 9/79 or so. This leads to occasional confusion as to whether the bike is a '79 or an '80, but the letter in the bottom right corner will determine that.

here are some pics i fixing to go look give me a min and will be back

ok so i looked and the sticker is pulled apart so i cant read it so thats out of the q: but can i do a vin decoder and see that way

Not an '80 850 front end, that's for sure. The single caliper assy came off of something older. It may have been crashed and forks etc. replaced using an older model. You should have dual calipers.
On edit: You also say you have a GL, but GLs have leading axle forks. The forks you have came off of a G or other model without leading forks. I'd be willing to wager they've been replaced at some time for some reason, probably a crash in its past.
