A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Idle Hammering Noise

My '83 GS1100E has a hammering noise when it warms up and idles in neutral. If I increase the rpm's it goes away.

I can't trace it but it sounds like it's coming from the lower end of the engine....crank maybe or could it be related to the clutch assembly?

I'll bet a dollar the clutch hub nut is loose. If the nut is tight then I'll bet the springs in the back of the hub are loose. Ray.

Another possibility is that it only sounds like it's coming from the bottom.

If it's actually coming from the top, it could be the infamous cam walk.

Does it happen for a couple of seconds, then go away for a few seconds, then come back?

Does it go away completely by about 1500 rpm?

If that's it, don't worry about it. :o

There has been at least one remedy posted a couple of years ago, but it involves extensive machining, far beyond the scope of the average home shop.

.

I'm not even going to touch this one. I went through that hammering noise last year....

ummmmmm.
its the starter clutch.
i have never heard on 16v. 1100/1150 having cam walk:confused:
did i mention that it was the starter clutch making the at idle knocking sound?

My clutch pack is noisy with a V&H hub and an APE nut.
They just are.

i'm betting it's the old loose springs in the clutch basket thing

I have this problem too.

I have this problem too.

I have this problem as well. It does go away when I pull in the clutch but it is only present when the bike is cold and drops close to 1000 RPM's. From what I gather loose clutch springs is the problem but is this something I need to work on right away? Will it wreck my clutch basket or should I just avoid it till I need a clutch?

if you have a stock basket and ever spin your RPM's to redline or power shift..
it would be wise to have an H/D backing plate kit installed in the clutch basket.
if these come apart it will do a lot of damage and i have seen them knock hole/holes in the engine cases.

I'd check it, since one of the problems can be the clutch hub nut coming loose. Major problems can ensue from that

The other problem is the loose springs and hub
