    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok guys I just received my 83' GS1000G a couple of hours ago. The guy I purchased it from delivered it on a trailer. When he started it it idled very low say 650rpm. He said the choke cable is rusted solid so he changes the idle speed at the screw under the carbs. I took it for a ride with my 4 year old son on the back. We drove for about 5 km as the bike got up to temp the ideling got higher and higher. It ended at 6500 rpm when I got home the last couple of km's I lugged it in a high gear just tot to let it rev my ears off.Every time I pulled the clutch whaaaaaa!!!!!!! when I tuned down the ideling at the screw the ideling came down. But now if I put it in gear the bike stalls and it feels as if the bike wants to move forward even with the clutch pulled in.

Sorry for the long post. I am not very knowledgeable mechanically. Please assist.What is going on here ?
 
Honestly, go back and read through the information Basscliff posted in your welcome post. It has alot of good things you'll be able to use to get it running again. Clean the carbs, check the valves, and go from there.

Where are you based, I have been riding and swinging spanners on the GS's for over 20 years, not to mention all the good gen I have picked up on this site, from the knowlagable folk. Two heads are better than one, if you not too far away from me, lets get that bike of yours purring again.
 
Before doing any "work" on the bike, get a repair manual and read through it. Nothing worse than trying to repair something without the proper information.
 
Most likely the intake boot O-rings are smashed flat and leaking - one of the most common of all GS problems. The bike is old and needs maintanance.

I just got the old girl back from the shop. The mech stripped and cleaned the carbs apparantly two jets was blocked. She runs unbelievable for her age. Took a 20mi trip and was smilling all the way. I cannot believe how smooth these gearboxes are for there age. Reconed calipers so everything is nice and tight, the rattles are all gone. Life is good again.
