All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

(1980 GS 850L) re-built and cleaned cards (dipped), sealed the air box, new boots from air box to carbs

....when I twist the throttle is sputters at about 2500-3500. I can keep twisting past the sputter every once in a while and it will get up to around 5000rpm and sounds clean but then when I let off it will idle at 1100 then sputter if I go up again. I have read tons of threads on this forum but nothing specific like this. It idled high earlier but I fixed a hung up spring in carb 1 and sealed my air box like suggested in another thread, now it idles great. Any ideas about the sputtering?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Sounds like you're a touch rich on the idle air adjustment screws if it's stumbling just off idle.

Try turning each of them in about an eighth of a turn, it doesn't take much to effect a change. :)

Will do thanks...will let you know how it turns out.

What happens if you "blip" the throttle ? Does it settle to idle nicely or does it drop lower than 1100 rpm and then catch up ? If it does, you're a bit rich. If it takes awhile for it to settle down to an idle or "hangs", then you're a bit lean. A good carb sync may help too.

I used to carry a small jeweler's screwdriver and adjust them to get the best off idle results. It took about 3 or 4 rides until I got it sorted. :)

It settles pretty quickly but it is sluggish as I "blip" it.

Plus, I have been looking but cannot find,,,,which one is the idle air adjustment screw? Never mind,,,found them.

You did pull that out when you dipped your carbs?

ok, it seems to be getting better as I turn the screws clockwise but I am getting some popping (backfire) as I let off the throttle.
